Job summary

Nova Scotia Health is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technologist for a long-assignment temporary full-time position in the Northern Zone, CEH. The incumbent will perform analytical tests, operate automated instruments, and maintain strict confidentiality while working with limited supervision.

The role requires NSRMLS licensure, completion of the MLT examination in all five disciplines, and willingness to work weekends/holidays. Travel may be required; bilingual skills (French) are an asset.

Qualifications

• Graduate from a recognized Medical Laboratory Technologist program.
• Must have completed the Medical Laboratory Technologist Examination in all five disciplines.
• Active licensure with Nova Scotia Regulator of Medical Laboratory Sciences (NSRMLS).
• Proof of professional liability insurance (PLI).
• Ability to work shiftwork (weekends/holidays).
• Willingness to travel when required.
• Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform analytical tests and procedures using established protocols with quality assurance.
• Operate computer-integrated instruments and laboratory information systems.
• Exercise independent judgment in reportability of results and maintain patient confidentiality.

About the Opportunity

The Medical Laboratory Technologist performs analytical tests and procedures offered by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine using appropriate methodologies and quality assurance techniques. The Medical Laboratory Technologist possesses the technical ability and problem-solving skills to perform all tests (both manual and automated) in the clinical and environmental laboratories. Performs laboratory tests with a network of steps and variables according to established protocols and works with little or no supervision in emergency and weekend/night situations. Operates instruments that are often computer integrated and networked and uses computerized information systems. Compares test results to pre-established criteria (reference intervals) and makes decisions regarding the reportability of results, thus exercising independent judgment. Stressful working conditions require the Medical Laboratory Technologist to be tactful, sensitive and able to communicate effectively and professionally. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times as deemed essential by the Medical Laboratory Technologist Code of Conduct .

Hours

• Long assignment full-time position; 75 hours biweekly

Compensation and Benefits

$33.20 - $42.47 hourly
$43.96 hourly with 25 years' service with the employer
