Job description

Medical Laboratory Technician

Department: Laboratory

Reports To: Clinical Pathologist/Lab Supervisor

Work Hours: 7.5 hours per day, 37.5 hours per week. Will include working weekends.

Overview

Providing support to the Vision, Values, Purpose, and Commitment of the Endocrine Lab. Under the supervision of the Lab Manager and a certified/registered Medical Laboratory Technologist, the Medical Laboratory Technician performs laboratory procedures in fertility and blood testing, including semen analysis and phlebotomy. The Technician supports accurate, reliable, and timely test results through proper specimen collection, preparation, testing assistance, and maintenance of laboratory instruments—all in accordance with quality and safety standards.

Responsibilities
  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical laboratory tasks under the supervision of a certified/registered MLT.
  • Collect, label, and process blood and semen specimens according to established protocols to ensure specimen integrity and traceability.
  • Perform routine semen analysis procedures (e.g., macroscopic and microscopic examination, sperm concentration and motility assessments, and sperm morphology) under supervision.
  • Conduct phlebotomy procedures, ensuring accurate patient identification, proper sample labeling, and patient comfort and safety.
  • Assist in routine hormone testing related to fertility evaluations.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment, performing daily maintenance and quality checks; promptly report any issues to the supervising MLT.
  • Participate in quality control, calibration, and equipment maintenance to ensure the reliability of test results.
  • Accurately document all test results, maintenance records, and QC data.
  • Prepare reagents, manage inventory, and maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Follow all safety, infection control, and biohazard disposal protocols.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and handle all data according to privacy regulations.
  • Support the laboratory’s quality management system and participate in internal audits or inspections when required.
Qualifications

Education, Training & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biological Science, or a related discipline.
  • Previous laboratory or fertility testing experience is an asset.
  • Experience performing semen analysis or phlebotomy preferred.
  • Not required to hold CSMLS certification; must work under the direct supervision of a certified/registered MLT.

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Up to date knowledge of relevant laboratory testing, techniques, methods, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize issues and workload, and complete assigned work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment, including computerized information systems.
  • Acute awareness of confidentiality and the need to keep all patients and personnel-based discussions to areas away from patients.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
