Nova Scotia Health is offering a permanent full-time Medical Laboratory Technical Specialist in Transfusion Medicine. The role includes leading QC tasks, validating tests, and making reportability decisions with minimal supervision in emergency and night shifts.

Ideal candidates hold an approved Medical Laboratory Technologist credential, NRSMLS/CSMLS licensure, and hospital blood bank experience. The position requires strong communication and problem-solving abilities in a dynamic lab setting.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an approved Medical Laboratory Technologist program.
  • Licensure with NRSMLS and CSMLS registration.
  • Three years' hospital Blood Transfusion Service experience required.
  • Blood bank/transfusion experience preferred.

About the Opportunity

The Medical Laboratory Technologist performs analytical tests and procedures offered by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine using appropriate methodologies and quality assurance techniques. The Medical Laboratory Technologist possesses the technical ability and problem-solving skills to perform all tests (both manual & automated) in the clinical and environmental laboratories. Performs laboratory tests with a network of steps and variables according to established protocols and works with little or no supervision in emergency and weekend/night situations. Operates instruments that are often computer integrated and networked and uses computerized information systems. Compares test results to pre-established criteria (reference intervals) and makes decisions regarding the reportability of results, thus exercising independent judgment. Stressful working conditions require the Medical Laboratory Technologist to be tactful, sensitive and able to communicate effectively and professionally. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times as deemed essential by the Medical Laboratory Technologist Code of Conduct.

Note: This position comes with a responsibility of guidance and leadership, reviewing QC as well as a document owner. Performing validations and test plans as required.

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Must be a graduate from an approved program in Medical Laboratory Technologist
  • Must be licensed with NRSMLS (formerly NSCMLT) and CSMLS registration
  • Current blood bank/transfusion medicine experience is strongly preferred
  • Three years' experience in a hospital Blood Transfusion Service required
  • Previous experience with LIS (Cerner) preferred
  • Good judgment required in solving technical problems and assessing validity of results before reporting
  • Considerable mental and visual demands in decision making, calculations using complex instruments and microscopy
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Hours
  • Permanent full-time position; 75 hours biweekly
Compensation and Benefits

$38.91 - $49.63 hourly

Successful candidates may be eligible for our benefits package which includes health, dental, travel, long-term disability, and life insurance coverage as well as a defined benefit pension plan.
