Job summary

Island Health is seeking a Medical Laboratory Assistant to support the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Pathology and Medical Genetics. You will collect specimens, prepare samples for analysis and perform routine tests while ensuring safety and quality.

Travel between multiple sites may be required and hours may include early morning shifts. The role emphasizes accuracy, teamwork and adherence to Island Health policies.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 with an accredited Laboratory Assistant training program and at least 1 year of related experience, or an equivalent mix of education/training/experience.
• Strong communication skills both written and verbal.
• Ability to operate and maintain related lab equipment and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

• Collect blood and other specimens from patients.
• Prepare samples for laboratory analysis and distribute/store specimens.
• Perform urinalysis using color-coded dipsticks and ECG testing as required.
• Travel between multiple sites may be required and organizationally coordinated.

Job Description

The Department of Laboratory Medicine, Pathology and Medical Genetics (LMPMG) is committed to enhancing patient care through the provision of consistently high quality laboratory services.

Reporting to the Team Leader, Chief Technologist or designate the Medical Laboratory Assistant performs laboratory procedures and related clerical duties. This includes blood and other specimen collection, preparing samples for analysis, distribution and storage of samples, performing laboratory tests such as urinalysis using colour-coded dipsticks and performing Electro Cardiogram (ECG) testing where required.

Travel may be a requirement of this position. Transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Vancouver Island Health Authority in accordance with the service assignment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training And Experience

Grade 12, successful completion of a recognized Laboratory Assistant training program plus one (1) year of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid BC Class 5 Vehicle Licence.
