About the Opportunity

The Division of Medical Genetics, in the Department of Pediatrics at Dalhousie University and IWK Health invites applications for a part‑time (0.7 FTE) continuing academic position as a Medical Geneticist at the Assistant/Associate Professor level. This individual will join a team of 7 Medical Geneticists, 16 Genetic Counsellors, 3 Metabolic Nurses, 2 Metabolic Dieticians and a Social Worker. The physician will primarily work with the medical genetics team and will provide clinical service to outpatient medical genetics patients and on‑call service to medical genetics and metabolic patients. The primary appointment will be clinical with duties in general clinical genetics and specifically the connective tissue clinic. Teaching and research FTE is negotiable based on expertise and interest. The IWK Maritime Centre for Precision Medicine allows for collaborative, leadership and research opportunities. Priority will be given to candidates with expertise in and demonstrated passion for all aspects of precision medicine, including empowering non‑geneticist clinicians in the care of genetics patients and optimizing clinical genetics service delivery through mainstreaming genetic testing.

The Division of Medical Genetics, in the Department of Pediatrics, is located in the IWK Hospital, Halifax. We provide genetic consultation and care to the Maritime Provinces with a population of almost 2 million people. We deliver comprehensive coverage of Cancer, Prenatal, Pediatric, Adult and Metabolic genetics and have strong support from Molecular Genetics, Cytogenetics, and Metabolic laboratory services, all on site. We collaborate with Pediatrics, Neonatology, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Adult and Pediatric Cardiology, Oncology, Ophthalmology and Neurology services. We provide medical genetics teaching to students at all levels, residents and fellows. Our research team collaborates closely with Dalhousie PhD scientists and clinicians, performing human genetics research. Genomics is a priority at Dalhousie, receiving Wave 1 status from the Faculty of Medicine. The newly established IWK Maritime Centre for Precision Medicine is a priority area for IWK Health.

Academic qualifications include an MD (or equivalent) from an accredited university with certification in Medical Genetics with an FRCPC, FCCMG or equivalent. Eligibility for licensure in Nova Scotia is essential. Compensation and academic appointment is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
