The Media Producer’s primary responsibility is to produce live and recorded video content for linear Television, FAST channels, Web, App and Social.

In this role, the Media Producer will operate the equipment in the control rooms. This position combines the traditional responsibilities of a control room Technical Director and Producer.

The Media Producer will work closely with the Lead & Meteorology Assignment Editors to stay up to date on weather conditions and relevant video content available to help tell the weather story. Duties also include ensuring the team updates content when necessary and in a timely manner. When needed, the MP will organize and produce live television hits and/or live streams as part of our Storm Centre or active weather coverage.

Please note this is an On Call position, on site at our Oakville Office. This means there are no guaranteed hours and you will be called as and when we have work requirements.

On-Call employees are called upon to replace employees on vacation, sick days, stat holidays or unplanned events. This means that schedules can be unpredictable and last minute but we will always make our best effort to schedule shifts in advance. Our ideal candidate is someone who is flexible and willing to work during a number of different shifts. You are ready to go, have a good understanding of your availability and deal well with last minute requests.

WHAT'S THE DAY TO DAY LIKE?
  • Produce and direct daily weather-related video content for linear Television, FAST channels, Web, App, Social and Sponsorships (including LOL) as needed.
  • Own the planning of content for scheduled day parts and take responsibility for all aspects of video content produced through the control room ensuring high standards are met.
  • Coordinate with a team of Video Meteorologists and/or In-studio Content Creators to schedule live and record times for various weather segments needed for our platforms.
  • Attend the daily team meetings most relevant to shift.
  • Coach and direct on-air presenters during live/live stream and recorded segments.
  • Continuously monitor information sources and weather data to ensure the accurate, credible and timely presentation of video content.
  • Well versed in operating equipment necessary to produce live/recorded segments, including audio boards, camera, graphics, Ross Overdrive system, Baron etc.
  • Daily contact with the Master Control Operator to confirm grids, block times, necessary changes, sponsored items and QC of content sent from the control room.
  • Regular communication with Operations Manager to identify technical problems, issues and any fixes that may make the MP’s duties easier.
  • Monitor emerging technologies and trends and investigate ways to incorporate within our TV and digital properties.
  • Extra work during active weather when required.
  • Provide handovers to the MP on the following shift & TV/TV Apps Lead, documenting any technical problems, content used and updates needed.
  • Work in conjunction with the Lead to conduct regular air checks.
  • Participate in monthly and/or bi-weekly Media Producer meetings.

  • College certificate or university degree in Communications/Journalism/Television production
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working as a television Technical Director (television news preferred)
  • Experience as Television or Content Producer
