Job summary

LMI Technologies in Burnaby, BC, is seeking a Mechanical Product Designer I to join our Opto-Mechanical (SMECH) team. You will design and test mechanical and opto-mechanical components for 3D sensor products, while applying statistical analysis to sensor data to ensure design adherence.

You will create detailed 3D CAD models (SolidWorks), 2D GD&T drawings, BOMs, and test reports, and collaborate during peer design reviews to drive continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Co-op or internship or entry-level product design experience in a high-technology manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks) for part and assembly modeling.
  • Basic understanding of statistical analysis (e.g., Lean Six Sigma concepts, SPC, DOE, or analyzing build data).
  • A self-driven and passionate mindset with a strong motivation to meet goals accurately and on time.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration across departments.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing, developing, and testing mechanical and opto-mechanical components for high-performance 3D sensor products.

Job description

We are seeking a Mechanical Product Designer I to join our Opto-Mechanical (SMECH) team to help design and deliver innovative 3D machine vision solutions. This role requires a proactive engineer who can seamlessly execute tasks within larger projects, applying their technical skills to solve complex challenges under the guidance of senior team members.

  • Design & Development: Assist in designing, developing, and testing mechanical and opto-mechanical components for high-performance 3D sensor products.
  • Data-Driven Analysis: Support the team by applying statistical analysis (such as Lean Six Sigma concepts) to sensor data from builds to help assess adherence to design requirements.
  • Task Execution: Run down assigned tasks for larger projects, asking insightful questions to clarify requirements and maintain the highest standard of work quality.
  • Proactive Problem‑Solving: Actively identify technical obstacles during your tasks and collaborate with senior engineers to research, test, and propose alternative solutions.
  • Technical Documentation: Create and maintain all necessary technical documentation, including detailed 3D CAD models (SolidWorks), 2D fabrication drawings (GD&T), bill of materials (BOMs), and test reports.
  • Collaboration & Improvement: Actively participate in peer design reviews to learn, receive constructive feedback, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Education and Qualifications (Must-haves)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a directly equivalent technical degree.
  • Co‑op, internship, or entry‑level product design experience in a high‑technology manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) for part and assembly modeling.
  • Basic understanding of statistical analysis for decision‑making (e.g., Lean Six Sigma concepts, SPC, DOE, or analyzing build data).
  • A self‑driven and passionate mindset with a strong motivation to meet goals accurately and on time.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration across departments.
Bonus Points (Significant Advantages)
  • Academic exposure, internship experience, or strong knowledge of 3D metrology, machine vision, robotics, or precision sensor design.
  • Exposure to or coursework involving opto‑mechanical design, precision lens mounting, or the integration of optical components.
  • Familiarity with scripting languages (like Python) for data analysis or task automation.
  • Registration or eligibility to register as an Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT).
  • Familiarity with project management software tools to help maintain and track task completion status.
  • Exposure to AI‑driven engineering tools (such as generative design features in 3D CAD) or productivity tools (like large language models for scripting, data analysis, or task automation) to enhance workflows.

Salary Range: $62,100 CAD to $88,578 CAD + Eligibility for Profit Sharing Program Participation (pending successful completion of probationary period and based on business performance)
