Job summary

Powell Canada, Inc. is seeking an Assembler based in Edmonton for the Switchgear Assembly department. You will assemble electrical units and Powell products, following drawings and instructions, while contributing to a safe and efficient production environment.

The role requires a high school diploma and 0–3 years of manufacturing experience. You will read tapes, use hand and power tools, and collaborate with senior/lead assemblers to meet ISO standards.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma required.
  • 0–3 years in manufacturing preferred.
  • Ability to read a tape measure and convert fractions/decimals; metric and imperial.

Responsibilities

  • Build and assemble mechanical components for Switchgear units.
  • Assemble Switchgear units per drawings and instructions.
  • Repair discrepancies in Switchgear units.
  • Promote safety and attend safety meetings.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas.

Job Description

Based out of the Electrical Division Edmonton (EDE) location, the Assembler will report to the Manufacturing Supervisor of the Switchgear Assembly department. The Assembler will be responsible for the assembly of electrical units, switchgear, and other Powell products.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Build and assemble mechanical components for Switchgear units.
  • Assemble Switchgear units per drawings and instructions.
  • Repair identified discrepancies with Switchgear units.
  • Promote a safety culture and attend all safety meetings.
  • Ensure quality by following standard work instructions and identifying any potential risks to product quality.
  • Ensure that work areas remain clean and well organized.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications
  • Minimum education level of a High School Diploma.
  • 0–3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Previous experience in Switchgear units is an asset.
  • Ability to read a tape measure (including conversions between fractions and decimals, metric and imperial).
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, use, repair, and maintenance.
  • Basic computer knowledge is an asset.
  • Prior ability or interest in building or repairing mechanical components is an asset.
  • Safety training certificates are an asset.
Work Authorization

This is a permanent position. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in Canada at the time of hire. Immigration sponsorship is not typically available and will be considered only where supported by business needs and applicable legal requirements.

Working Conditions
  • Safety-sensitive position in a temperature-controlled manufacturing or industrial environment with occasional outside activities.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment at all times (hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, safety harnesses, respirators as required).
  • Must work from any type of ladder (step ladder, “A” frame ladder, and all-size extension ladders) and scaffolding.
  • Working at heights usually no higher than 30 feet in the air on or using proper lift equipment.
Physical Requirements
  • Maintain body equilibrium and agility to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, ascending, or descending stairs.
  • Bend at the waist, knees, and extend arms and hands in any direction repetitively.
  • Continuous standing and walking 50–300 foot distances for long periods with only occasional sitting.
  • Climb stairs frequently throughout the shift.
  • Frequently look over shoulders, use both arms above shoulders, and use both arms at full length.
  • Apply or exert a force continuously up to 50 lbs with upper extremities.
  • Use hand tools such as tin snips, hammer, and power tools (some vibrating) for long periods with frequent repetition.
