Overview

At Apex Geomatics, we are Leading by Design - shaping the future of surveying, geospatial, and geotechnical services across Western Canada. We are seeking a Materials Testing Supervisor to lead the daily operations of our geotechnical materials testing laboratory and field services. This position will be based out of our head office in Sherwood Park, Alberta.

This is a hands-on leadership role where technical expertise meets team development. The individual will oversee all aspects of lab operations and testing coordination, including managing staff, ensuring safety and compliance, maintaining equipment, and quality assurance. In this pivotal position, the Supervisor will foster collaboration and develop a high-performing team, ensuring compliance and delivering excellence through Apex’s proven process.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate the daily operations of the geotechnical materials testing laboratory and field crews, ensuring smooth workflow and on-time deliverables.
  • Promote and enforce Apex’s safety-first standards, ensuring all work aligns with HSE protocols, industry requirements, and regulatory obligations.
  • Oversee procurement, inventory, and maintenance of laboratory and field supplies to guarantee operational readiness and compliance with testing standards.
  • Prepare and administer testing schedules, assigning resources and personnel to meet project timelines and client expectations.
  • Apply strong technical knowledge to guide testing for soil, aggregate, concrete, and asphalt materials.
  • Validate and approve test results for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project specifications.
  • Supervise, coach, and mentor technicians, fostering skill development and consistency in procedures and data integrity.
  • Act as a liaison with Project Managers, Engineers, and clients to ensure testing requirements are fully understood and achieved.
  • Maintain CCIL certification requirements for both laboratory and field operations.
  • Implement and monitor quality assurance processes to uphold data reliability and reporting accuracy.
  • Provide constructive feedback and support ongoing performance development of staff.
  • Contribute to the preparation of pricing proposals, estimates, and supporting project documents.
  • Lead the onboarding and training of new team members, ensuring they are equipped for success.
  • Cultivate collaboration, inclusion, and high-performance culture across both lab and field teams.
  • Serve as a role model for safe work practices, actively participating in and reinforcing the health and safety management system.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 7 years of progressive materials testing and laboratory experience, including leadership of technical teams and project delivery.
  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience is an asset.
  • Civil Engineering Technologist Diploma or a Degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Registered, or eligible for registration with ASET.
  • Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories (CCIL) certification or the ability to obtain certification.
  • Hold a valid driver’s licence and clean driving abstract.
  • Safety certifications held in CSTS, WHMIS, and TDG.
  • Strong knowledge of soil, aggregate, concrete, and asphalt testing methods.
