Qualifications

  • 20+ years of experience in Corrosion, Materials, or Metallurgical Engineering in an Upgrader or Refinery.
  • Knowledge of pressure equipment regulatory management, including ABSA design survey seminar.
  • Familiarity with pressure equipment design, maintenance, and codes (ASME, TEMA, etc.).
  • NACE/AMPP Corrosion Specialist Certification is an asset.

  • Support production units by providing metallurgical assessment of damage mechanisms and failure likelihood.
  • Provide metallurgical expertise for critical repairs and hot tap welding on live piping and equipment.
  • Act as an expert for metallurgical failures, investigations, and material selection.
  • Mentor and develop Materials Engineers, deliver technical training, and participate in technical networks.

We are seeking a robust Material Engineer for a Senior Technical Specialist role at Syncrude Mildred Lake. The role involves acting as the Suncor TA2 (Technical Authority 2) for various assets, supporting safe and reliable plant operations, and overseeing advanced metallurgical analysis work by external contractors.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Undergraduate or Master’s degree in Material / Metallurgical Engineering
  • Registered with APEGA as a P. Eng. Responsible Member (RM)
  • 20+ years of experience in Corrosion, Materials, or Metallurgical Engineering in an Upgrader or Refinery
  • Knowledge of pressure equipment regulatory management, including ABSA design survey seminar
  • Familiarity with pressure equipment design, maintenance, and codes (ASME, TEMA, etc.)
  • Experience with corrosion inhibitors, corrosion rate calculation tools for static equipment and piping
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for consulting with colleagues and regulatory bodies
  • NACE/AMPP Corrosion Specialist Certification is an asset

Key Accountabilities:

  • Support production units by providing metallurgical assessment of damage mechanisms and failure likelihood
  • Provide metallurgical expertise for critical repairs and hot tap welding on live piping and equipment
  • Review and support Equipment Strategies/RBI with a focus on high-risk items
  • Act as an expert for metallurgical failures, investigations, and material selection
  • Oversee outsourced work to ensure technical compliance
  • Participate in risk scenarios and technical decision-making
  • Assess Materials Engineering/corrosion-related issues and support outage activities
  • Mentor and develop Materials Engineers, deliver technical training, and participate in technical networks and conferences
  • Act as Syncrude’s Technical Authority for Metallurgical Engineering and oversee special procedures
  • Support project initiatives with metallurgical expertise

Location & Other Details:

  • Based at Syncrude Mildred Lake, Fort McMurray
  • Standard 40-hour work week, with potential for extended hours
  • Relocation support required if residing outside 60 km of Fort McMurray
