Job Title: Electrical Apprentice - ON

Department: Manufacturing

Reports To: Plant Manager

Status: Non-Exempt

Salary Range: $18.00 - $23.00 (Actual salary is based on geographic location, qualifications, and experience)

Summary

The Electrical Apprentice is responsible for installing electrical components as per project drawings and specifications, wiring of electrical components and achieving their Certificate of Qualification. Learns on-the-job under the supervision of a journeyman electrician through both hands-on projects and coursework in a classroom setting. Duties include basic cleaning and maintenance tasks, and progress to more skill-based tasks as experience is gained.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Attend and complete all classroom training via day release program.
  • Complete the mandatory 9000 hours of on job training.
  • Follow instruction of electrical installation under supervision of Licensed Electrician.
  • Assist a journeyman electrician and follow instructions.
  • Increased responsibility through each level of apprenticeship.

Installation of the following based on drawings, specifications, and direction from Supervisor/Electrician:

  • Power and control panels.
  • System wiring for motor controls, power circuits and instrumentation.
  • Assist with factory acceptance testing as required.
  • Create and size conduit layouts based on electrical and mechanical schematics.
  • Identify any quality issues and report them to the Electrician.
  • Assist in the development of the material selection (Bill of Materials) for wiring between components.
  • Assist Electricians as required on equipment and building maintenance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Other Duties And Responsibilities
  • Prepare and clean work areas.
  • Carry and deliver materials.
  • Install, repair, and maintain various electrical wiring systems and equipment.
  • Use measuring equipment and hand tools to perform conduit work.
  • Responsible for performing duties in a safe manner and promoting safety to others in accordance with Newterra’s safety policies and procedures. This includes reporting all safety concerns, near-misses and incidents to their manager.
  • Adhere to the company processes as detailed in Newterra’s Business Management System (BMS) and bring forward ideas for continuous improvement.
  • Complete all responsibilities while ensuring adherence to Newterra’s Delegation of Authority.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Ability to travel to school once per week.
  • Wiring or college experience, preferred.
  • Must have personal tools.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve a common goal.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings an asset.
  • Ability to work within specified timelines while maintaining focus on quality and safety.

Physical Demands

Almost continually verbally or orally communicating with others. Accurate hand/eye coordination is required. Finger dexterity is required, as well as hand strength, with the ability to grasp, lift, push and pull. Work may involve standing, stooping, bending, or sitting for long periods of time. May lift parts weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to work under pressure and interact with others on a regular basis.

Work Environment

This is a manufacturing environment and will be exposed to elements such as loud noise, hazardous equipment, heat, dirt, dust, fumes, and other materials. Company safety standards must be always followed.
