Responsibilities

  • Recruit, interview, select, hire staff to enhance Raising our Children.
  • Supervise staff: communication, problem solving, policy adherence, performance appraisals, coaching.
  • Manage annual work plans and budgets; prepare program area budgets and funding reports.
  • Coordinate promotion of Raising our Children; prepare reports and briefing notes.
  • Develop systems to fulfill program goals; liaise with leadership and frontline workers in communities.
  • Develop regional policies, objectives, and standards for Raising our Children.
  • Support program evaluation and quality improvement; monitor health service delivery.
  • Represent SLFNHA on external committees and at meetings; conduct community visits.
  • Provide other duties as required.

Position Summary

The Approaches to Community Wellbeing department (ACW) is a regional resource to 31 First Nations communities. ACW provides expertise, support, services, and programming in public health to the region. The program also supports communities in the development, implementation, and monitoring of their own Approaches to Community Wellbeing. The Raising our Children section of the model includes Family Health, Youth Development, and Building Healthy Relationships.

The Manager – Raising Our Children will provide oversight and direction for the Raising our Children programming of the Approaches to Community Wellbeing. The Raising our Children Manager will oversee the regional services provided by the Raising our Children Team, and will work with communities to enhance their capacity around Raising our Children initiatives.

Accountability

The Manager – Raising Our Children is directly accountable to the Director – Approaches to Community Wellbeing.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a health or social services related field or a combination of education/experience as deemed acceptable by SLFNHA.
  • 2 years direct work experience in a project management capacity, including all aspects of process development and execution or a combination of education/experience as deemed acceptable by SLFNHA.
  • 2 years direct work experience in family health, youth development, or healthy relationships or a combination of education/experience as deemed acceptable by SLFNHA.
  • Extensive knowledge of public health, including family health (maternal, newborn, child health), youth development, and healthy relationships.
  • Experience supervising, planning and evaluating projects
  • Understanding of public health systems (including Health Promotion and Protection Act and the Ontario Public Health Standards), and First Nations health systems
  • Understanding of the unique determinants of health for First Nations in northwestern Ontario, and the health landscape in which they seek services.
  • Experience working both independently and in a team-orientated, collaborative environment is essential.

  • Experience and training in cultural competency with First Nations
  • Valid Ontario G Drivers Licence
  • Ability to communicate in one of the First Nations dialects within the Sioux Lookout Zone an asset
  • Must be willing to travel
  • Must be willing to relocate and live in Sioux Lookout
  • The ability to perform the requirements of the position on a regular basis
Roles & Responsibilities
  • 1.Work with the ACW Director and Human Resources staff to recruit, interview, select, hire, and employ an appropriate number of employees to enhance Raising our Children.
  • 2.Provide supervision and direction to Raising our Children staff by: oEnsuring communication practices are clear oProviding effective problem solving and conflict resolution as required oAdministering, monitoring, and ensuring adherence to organizational policies and procedures oAppraising employee job results oProviding ongoing coaching, advice, and motivation oIdentifying and supporting professional development and training of staff
  • 3.Monitor work plan and budgets of Raising our Children oManaging the development of annual work plans and reports oConducting ongoing health planning with the Raising our Children staff oAssisting in the preparation of an annual budget for each program area as per service goals and objectives oMonitoring budget variances oMonitoring and ensuring proper financial coding oAssisting with the preparation and submission of funding requests and reports
  • 4.Coordinate the ongoing promotion of Raising our Children o Managing preparation, maintenance, and submission of all correspondence, reports, and briefing notes o Conducting presentations as needed
  • 5.Coordinate and supervise Raising our Children services oPlanning, developing, and implementing systems that perform the work and fulfill the goals of the program efficiently and effectively oLiaising with leadership, frontline workers, health care providers, and other service workers in communities to collaboratively strategize means to tackle priority issues related to Raising our Children oFacilitating delivery of Raising our Children services to support communities oParticipating and direct delivery of training, educational, and capacity building activities for all communities related to Raising our Children oActioning community concerns and requests appropriately
  • 6.In conjunction with the policy, develop regional policies, objectives, and standards for Raising our Children
  • 7.Support program and service evaluation and quality improvement oEvaluating the effectiveness, acceptability, availability, and cost efficiency of Raising our Children programming in conjunction with the planning and evaluation staff oEnsuring that systems are in place to monitor the delivery health services to the First Nations communities
  • 8.Represent the organization as required in various settings: oRepresenting SLFNHA on external committees or at meetings as needed oConducting presentations to various stakeholders and at conferences and meetings, as appropriate oConducting community visits on a regular basis oUnderstanding the organization’s mandate and be able to convey at forums as required
  • 9.Provide assistance when required and any other duties assigned
