Job description

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Manager of Culture/Curator is a member of the senior management team. The Manager of Culture/Curator oversees the administration and operations of the Arnprior & District Museum and the coordination of municipal cultural and heritage initiatives.

The primary responsibilities (request Job Description for complete listing):

  • As Curator, will manage the Town’s extensive historical collection of artefacts, maintaining accurate records of collections, conducting historical research to identify artefacts and acquiring items related to the history of Arnprior.
  • Build networks and foster relationships to actively promote the Town’s cultural and heritage assets to attract events.
  • Oversees the preparation and administration of related budgets, monitors related expenditures and revenues, and apply for grants.
  • Prepare reports as directed including the annual Curator’s report for the Town of Arnprior, and the monthly curatorial report to the Board.
  • Assist as requested with various components of the Town’s external tourism services and marketing, fostering relationships with stakeholders in the Arnprior area.
  • Act as a municipal resource relative to community cultural initiatives and programs, considerable liaison with user groups, community organizations and the general public.
  • In consultation with the Board and Museum staff, develop and organize workshops, after school programming, Museum tours, and exhibits to reflect and promote the history and culture of the Arnprior area.
  • Support public relations and communication efforts by organizing and promoting interest in cultural and museum programs, exhibitions and activities.
  • Manage a staff of part time and seasonal employees.
  • Develop procedures in accordance with the Ministry of Culture’s Standards for Community Museums in Ontario, as well as Canadian Museum Association directives.

Required Qualifications

  • Post Secondary Degree in History, Museum Studies, Archeology or related field.
  • Minimum five (5) years experience of related management experience in the museum and culture industry, preferably within a municipal environment.
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating partnerships amongst various stakeholders.
  • Work familiarity of research, gathering, and analyzing historical information from various relevant sources and demonstrated knowledge of being able to verify research for accuracy.
  • Be aware of and able to articulate and put into practice up to date museum standards and directives.
  • An understanding of relevant legislation, policies and procedures (for example, Municipal Actand Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act).
  • Computer literate and ability to use the internet, email, and various software applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Thorough knowledge of the delivery of cultural services, the management of events, volunteer services, strategic planning, staff supervision, customer service and budget planning and control.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to work effectively and independently and with others.
  • Ability to build and maintain close working relationships and facilitate collaboration with staff and other community stakeholders.
  • Highly organized, strong record keeping skills, and demonstrated time management skills.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
