Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Executive Director, Pollution Control/Deputy City Engineer, this position will be responsible for:
- Managing the Environmental Compliance Coordinator, policies, procedures and activities.
- Providing direct assistance and technical support on corporate environmental matters to all City departments, as well as facilitating environmental education and awareness across the Corporation, its agencies, and the community.
- Facilitating environmental monitoring programs such as sewer use by‑law enforcement, watershed monitoring, laboratory management, closed landfill monitoring and spill response, which provides direct protection for the health of the community and its watersheds.
- Overseeing remedial measures and/or maintenance for corrective actions, as required.
- Acting as a municipal representative on the Essex Region Source Water Protection Committee to help identify and mitigate health risks to the public from threats to the water supply.
- Monitoring and maintaining municipal landfills.
- Responsible for the annual MECP and ECCC reporting for both Plants and Retention Treatment Basin.
- Preparing annual budgetary items; supervising associated staff, conducting performance appraisals, training and participating in staff development, recruitment, disciplinary matters and the ongoing review of employee lost time.
- Performing Occupational Health & Safety duties as outlined in the Corporation’s Health and Safety Program.
- Performing other related duties as required.
Qualifications
- Must have a University Degree in Sciences or Chemistry and a minimum of six (6) years of experience in laboratory techniques, industrial waste control and unit process inspection, sampling procedures, installation and use of monitoring equipment.
- Must have progressive managerial responsibilities in the areas of laboratory operation, industrial waste control and enforcement.
- Must have a full understanding of the principles and technology of industrial processes and wastewater treatment.
- Should have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations and the hazards associated with the work.
- Will be required to complete and remain current as per the requirements of the Corporation’s Management Certificate Program.
- Progression through the Art of Supervision Program Certificate or a supervisory program of a similar nature is considered an asset.
