Job description

Job Summary

The Department of Medicine is a clinical academic department within the Faculty of Medicine in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It is a large and complex department with over 450 faculty members organized into 15 divisions and spread over several sites across the Maritimes. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer/ CFO , the Manager, Academic will lead and manage our academic programs for education and research including undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development with a focus on strategic growth, academic excellence and learner success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of the core internal medicine residency program, ensuring compliance with Royal College standards and support subspecialty program administrators (PA’s) to do the same. For all 16 residency programs within the department (over 150 residents) ensure compliance with Royal College standards, ensure an appropriate allocation of resources within constraints, and reporting requirements are met.
  • Manage program budgets, accreditation, policy development, resident support and evaluation.
  • Lead the CaRMS application process, orientation, scheduling, remediation and stakeholder engagement.
  • Oversee the coordination of clerkship and elective experiences for medical students, coordinating logistics, evaluations and curriculum delivery. Coordinate placement of learners annually across distributed clinical sites, balancing learning goals with system capacity.
  • Support research and innovation activities within the department by managing a budget, coordinating research related events, and supporting researchers in navigating research pathways and policies within Dalhousie and Nova Scotia Health.
  • Supervise a team of six administrative staff.

Note

The successful applicant will be eligible for some hybrid work (combination of in-person work and some remote work from within Nova Scotia) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field with approximately five years’ experience in academic program management (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills and the proven ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in continuous quality improvement methods.
  • Experienced working within a complex environment.
