Qualifications

About The Role

The Maintenance Technician is tasked with overseeing the optimal operation and maintenance of the Newell HVDC converter station along with supporting our mechanical systems at our other stations. Working under senior guidance, the incumbent ensures electrical power is transferred safely and efficiently.

What You Get To Do
  • Conduct regular inspections of all generating sites and plant equipment and ensure the equipment is performing properly.
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on plant equipment (engines, pumps, HVAC and control systems, domestic/sanitary systems, fire protection systems, security systems, etc.).
  • Overhaul units or equipment as required.
  • Perform regular housekeeping functions at the sites.
  • Troubleshoot problems (faults, failures), analyzes, corrects/repairs, and completes reports.
  • Start/Synchronize/Stop units as required to meet demand.
  • Respond to industrial customer requests.
  • Monitor and operate generating units to minimize costs by running units in the most economical way and dispatching units to extend service periods.
  • Perform related administrative duties such as the preparation of maintenance reports, ordering of parts, fuel etc. and other related paperwork.
  • Assess hazards, plan, and execute O&M work, including switching and isolations consistent with Health Safety & Environmental Management Systems.
  • May coordinate/supervise the work of contractors or other temporary staff.
  • Assist Electrical Technologist with emergency substation repairs
  • Operate a motor vehicle and various types of equipment including test equipment.

Situational shift work, rotational shift work and rotating standby (on call) is considered as part of this job. Some travel is involved which could include remote locations.

What You Bring
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Relevant trade certificate (Millwright or Heavy Duty Mechanic) or a diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

An expectation of this position is to, at times, provide after-hours stand-by duties. As such, you will be required to maintain a residence within 60 minutes of Newell Converter Station.
