Job summary

West Fraser is recruiting for a Maintenance Superintendent at our Hinton Wood Products site in Alberta. You will lead a maintenance department, supervise a team of supervisors, a reliability coordinator, and a maintenance planner across sawmill and planer operations.

The role emphasizes safety, training apprentices, and driving uptime through proactive planning and root-cause analysis. The successful candidate will have a Certified Tradesperson credential, 5–10 years of supervisory maintenance

Responsibilities

• Drive reliability and maintenance planning to increase uptime.
• Work with maintenance team to identify root causes and implement fixes.
• Plan and execute capital and non-capital improvement projects.
• Ensure dust, oil mitigation plans are followed and actions completed.
• Manage production information and budgeting for the site.
• Enhance product quality and recovery; maximize efficiency.
• Collaborate with purchaser on spare parts for sawmill and planer.
• Develop predictive and preventative maintenance programs.

Reporting directly to the Sawmill Superintendent, this role is a key member of the leadership team. The successful candidate will lead a maintenance department that includes maintenance supervisors (both SM & PL), a reliability coordinator, a maintenance planner & all trades (Millwrights, Welders, & Electricians) for the entire Hinton Wood Products division. We will give higher consideration to candidates with previous experience in the wood remanufacturing sector, including OSB, plywood, Sawmill, Planer Mill, or forest products.

You'll Do:

• Supervising Maintenance supervisors, reliability coordinator, & maintenance planner
• Maintenance of Sawmill & Planer processing equipment
• Safety of the crew supporting supervisors in Lockout Procedures, Field Level Hazard & Risk Assessments (FLHRA), & Safety Audits
• Ensuring Training/mentoring apprentices is consistent
• Supporting and driving reliability & maintenance planning to increase uptime
• Working with maintenance team to resolve issues and guide reliability to true root cause analysis
• Creating and planning improvement projects (capital & noncapital assignments)
• Ensure AON, dust & oil mitigation expectations are met & any action plans are being followed & executed
• Manage all key production information for the site
• Build and execute on budget
• Maximizing product quality and recovery
• Ensuring supervisors are managing parts with our purchaser for both sawmill & planer
• Developing a predictive and preventative maintenance program
• Scheduling and attendance
• Teaching and educating supervisors and lead hands on expectations of their role, & new leaders of the future (Personal development plans, Gap analysis, culture, Diversity, Equity &Inclusion, etc)
• Work in conjunction with the planer superintendent on all aspects of the energy plant

You have:

• Certified Tradesperson; preference will be given to Red Seal Millwright or electrician
• Prefer 5-10 years of maintenance supervisory experience
• Strong leadership skills and communication skills
• Commitment to safety
• Well-organized
• Able to work in a group as a team player & leader
