Job summary

The Millwood Retirement Residence in Toronto, ON is seeking a Maintenance Manager to lead the maintenance department, oversee routine repairs, and manage safety and quality programs. You will coordinate with contractors, supervise staff, and contribute to budgeting and compliance with health and safety standards.

The role emphasizes a person-centered approach, strong leadership, and proactive maintenance planning to support residents and facility operations.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma preferred.
  • Two years experience in managerial or supervisory capacity preferred.
  • Experience in general maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to lead a team by setting an example in a direct and positive manner.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, plumbing and carpentry.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Skilled in conflict management techniques.
  • Previous employment in a health care/hospitality setting is an asset.
  • Demonstrated understanding of/empathy for the needs of seniors.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing a budget.
  • Familiar with the provisions of the following legislation: Employment Standards Act, Workers’ Compensation Act, Retirement Homes Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Must have a clear vulnerable sector screen, no older than 6 months, TB test results from less than 6 months old and must be able to provide three supervisory references.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and execute all aspects of the Maintenance department.
  • Perform routine maintenance, servicing, and repair operations to maintain building and equipment in proper condition.
  • Schedule & supervise maintenance and repair work not completed in-house.
  • Manage ongoing maintenance requirements and preventative maintenance programs.
  • Notify GM of significant building/equipment malfunctions.
  • Coordinate electrical or plumbing work with skilled trades/contractors.
  • Conduct regular maintenance rounds for life safety and building systems.
  • Implement and monitor quality improvement programs.
  • Participate in budget preparation and control.
  • Promote a person-centered approach and uphold policies and Residents’ Bill of Rights.
  • Display adaptability in changing circumstances.
  • Maintain inventories and safe storage of supplies.
  • Participate in infection control, quality management, and safety committees as required.
  • Complete performance appraisals and provide ongoing associate education.
  • Maintain staffing schedules as applicable.
  • Promote organizational vision, mission, values.
  • Supervise fire prevention and fire drill procedures.
  • Be a Certified Joint Health and Safety Member and participate in related inspections and meetings.
  • Perform any other tasks as assigned.

The MaintenanceManager reports to the General Manager and performs general, routine maintenance and servicing operations throughout the facility, in accordance with applicable codes and regulations and as directed by the General Manager.

Wage Rate

The starting annual salary is $61,500

Vacancy

Responsibilities:
  • Is responsible to oversee and execute all aspects of the Maintenance department,
  • As directed and in accordance with applicable codes and regulations, performs a variety of routine maintenance, servicing, and repair operations to maintain home, equipment, furnishings, fixtures, and grounds in proper condition,
  • Responsible for effectively scheduling & supervising maintenance and repair work not completed in‑house,
  • Manages ongoing maintenance requirements and carries out preventative maintenance programs as directed,
  • Notifies the General Manager of significant building/equipment malfunctions/problems,
  • Coordinates specialized work, such as electrical or plumbing, to skilled trades/outside contractors and monitors work performed,
  • Conducts regular maintenance rounds to ensure all life safety and building and support systems are functioning properly,
  • Implements and monitors quality improvement,
  • Participates in budget preparation and control,
  • Focuses on a person‑centered approach while maintaining the organization’s policies and procedures,
  • Displays a sense of spontaneity and ability to change the moment positively for people,
  • Presents a positive approach, not controlling language and actions towards people,
  • Maintains inventories and assures safe storage of all supplies,
  • Participates in committee meetings such as infection control, quality management, and safety, as required,
  • Completes performance appraisals of associates as required,
  • Provides ongoing associate education,
  • Maintains the staffing schedules as applicable,
  • Promotes the vision, mission, values, and the Residents’ Bill of Rights,
  • Supervises fire prevention and fire drill procedures,
