Summary

Under direct supervision, sets up, operates, and adjusts various types of conventional or automatic machines including lathes, drill presses, grinders, and other precision equipment. Works from drawings and written instructions to create replacement and new parts, making repairs to metal parts, or for experimental apparatus or prototype equipment. Work is routine, and machining is performed to ordinary tolerances.

Job Duties

  1. Makes parts to specifications, using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders. Sets up, adjusts, or operates basic or specialized machine tools used to perform precision machining operations.
  2. Measures, examines, or tests completed units for defects and conformance to specifications, using precision instruments like micrometers. Calculates dimensions or tolerances with instruments such as micrometers or Vernier calipers.
  3. Monitors machine feed and speed during machining, maintains proper operational condition of machine tools, and verifies efficiency.
  4. Studies samples, blueprints, drawings, or engineering data to determine methods or sequences of operations needed to fabricate products.
  5. Uses bandsaws, cutoff wheels, table saws, and pedestal grinders. Lays out, measures, and marks metal stock for cuts. Fits and assembles parts to repair or make machine tools. Sets up or operates metalworking, brazing, heat-treating, welding, or cutting equipment.
  6. Installs repaired or new parts into equipment, ensuring proper lubrication or cooling. Designs fixtures, tooling, or experimental parts for engineering needs.
  7. Supports projects from planning to testing, using knowledge of machine functions, metal properties, and mathematics. Prepares sketches for product appearance.
  8. Tests experimental models under simulated conditions for development, standardization, or feasibility. Installs experimental parts or assemblies like hydraulic systems, electrical wiring, lubricants, or batteries.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

Typically requires a high school diploma or GED.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of metals and measurements used in machining processes.
  • Knowledge of machinist, CAD, and/or CAM software.
  • Strong understanding of mathematics and its applications.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and techniques to maximize manufacturing efficiency.
  • Ability to monitor gauges, dials, or indicators to ensure proper machine operation.
  • Ability to safely operate tools like piranha, metal shear, and metal breaks.

Physical Demands

Requires manual dexterity, arm-hand steadiness, multi-limb coordination, the ability to lift 50 pounds or more, and stand for extended periods.
