Job summary

The North Island - Central Coast Natural Resource District in Port McNeill seeks a Licensed Authorizations Officer. You will review Land Act authorizations and help allocate Crown land, adjudicate resource applications, and advise on forest licences, working with First Nations and stakeholders to balance land and resource priorities.

Port McNeill offers a warm community with hybrid work options; travel to remote sites may be required, and a CRC will be part of the process.

Qualifications

• Degree in natural resource field recognized by FPBC.
• RPF registration or immediate eligibility within six months of employment.
• Recent experience in natural resource management (within 3 years).
• Recent experience engaging with First Nations or stakeholders (within 3 years).

Job Summary

The North Island - Central Coast Natural Resource District has approximately 30 staff, including the Tenure’s Team, which is a close-knit group of professionals who work together to manage diverse forest and natural resource values across a vast and unique area, including the Great Bear Rainforest. This well-established team has solid guidance and leadership and is known for their strong work ethic, dedication to client service, and ability to provide practical solutions while maintaining a positive and fun work culture. They collaborate closely with other units, such as the Geomatics, First Nations, and Field teams, contributing significantly to the economic and environmental prosperity for our North Island communities.

The Role

Based in Port McNeill, this role puts you at the heart of natural resource decision-making in the North Island - Central Coast Natural Resource District, where land, forestry, and coastal priorities come together. As a Licensed Authorizations Officer within Forest Tenures, you'll lead the review and administration of Land Act authorizations, supporting the allocation of Crown land and adjudication of resource applications for a wide range of land and resource uses. You'll also support and gain exposure to Forest Act determinations and provide advice on forest licences to cut, cutting permits, and special use permits, helping guide the allocation of forest resources and adjudication of tenure applications. Working closely with First Nations, local stakeholders, and colleagues, you'll navigate complex applications and help shape decisions that support the sustainable use of Crown land and natural resources across this diverse coastal region.

Qualifications: Education and Experience Requirements

• Degree in the natural resource field, or equivalent, as recognized by Forest Professionals BC (FPBC).
• Registered or immediately eligible for registration as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) in BC with Forest Professionals BC (FPBC). Note: “Immediately eligible for registration” means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.
• Related and recent (within the last three (3) years) experience working in natural resource management.
• Recent (within the last three (3) years) experience engaging with First Nations and/or stakeholders.

Professional Registration and Certification Requirements

• Registered or immediately eligible for registration as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) in BC with Forest Professionals BC (FPBC). Note: “Immediately eligible for registration” means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.

Additional Requirements

• Valid BC driver’s licence.
• Willingness and ability to conduct field work which may include travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.

About this Position

There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available in Port McNeill.
This location receives a $47.18 bi-weekly isolation allowance .
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
Applicants who do not fully meet the required qualifications may be considered for this position, but at a lower classification.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies in Port McNeill.
