Job summary

Cando Rail & Terminals Ltd. in Winnipeg is seeking a Locomotive Mechanic to repair and service the fleet in field or small team settings. Outdoor work, problem solving, and a strong safety culture are central to the role.

Responsibilities include inspections, preventive maintenance, repairs, and logkeeping. The position requires the ability to lift heavy objects, work in all weather, and hold a valid driver's license. A stable, hands-on environment with training opportunities awaits.

Qualifications

• Diesel, automotive or heavy equipment experience.
• Experience in heavy industrial environments and with similar equipment.

Responsibilities

• Inspect locomotives, diagnose issues, and advise on repair needs.
• Perform scheduled maintenance and inspections per standards.
• Track inspections and repairs; log all activities.
• Repair/replace engines, braking systems, wheels, bearings, couplers, fuel systems.
• Perform major mechanical repairs and engine overhauls.
• Interpret technical drawings and schematics.
• Maintain work areas, vehicles, and tools.

Job Description

The L ocomotive Mechanic will work independently or in small team environments repairing and servicing various types of locomotives.

• Inspects locomotive, diagnose issues, make recommendations as to course of action and repair/recondition as needed
• Perform scheduled preventative maintenance and inspections on locomotives in accordance with company and regulatory standards
• Track all inspections and repair/maintenance work performed; completes all required logs
• Repair and replace components including engines, braking systems, wheels, bearings, couplers, fuel systems and other components.
• Perform major mechanical repairs and engine overhauls.
• Interpret technical drawings and schematics
• Maintains and cares for all work areas, vehicles, and tools used to perform the locomotive and equipment servicing

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities

• Ability to independently plan, organize, and prioritize workload
• Strong mechanical aptitude with demonstrated experience in heavy equipment repair.
• Ability to lift/push/pull a minimum of fifty (50) pounds and to maneuver in/through/around equipment easily and safely
• Ability to meet Workplace Safety & Health standards
• Proficient with tools, test equipment and safe shop practices
• General computer skills with ability to learn new processes
• Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license
• Ability to work indoors/outdoors in all weather conditions
• Willingness to address emergency service problems at any time of day or night

Education & Experience

• Diesel, automotive or heavy equipment experience.
• Experience working in heavy industrial environments and with similar equipment
