Job summary

Cando Rail & Terminals is seeking a Locomotive Mechanic to repair and service its locomotive fleet in the field, either independently or in small teams. The role involves outdoor work, problem solving, and upholding a strong safety culture across our diverse rail services.

Applicants should have diesel/heavy equipment experience and be capable of performing major repairs, inspections, and preventive maintenance while keeping accurate logs and adhering to regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

• Inspect locomotives, diagnose issues, and determine repair actions.
• Perform scheduled maintenance and inspections per standards.

• Repair engines, braking systems, wheels, and related components.
• Perform engine overhauls and major mechanical repairs.
• Interpret technical drawings and schematics.

Job Description

Locomotive Mechanic will work independently or in small team environments in the field repairing and servicing Cando’s fleet of locomotives. If you enjoy working outdoors, physical activity, problem solving, and a company that promotes a strong safety culture, this opportunity is for you! Cando provides specialized rail operating services. We provide a wide range of rail services including short line operations, industrial switching, material handling, terminal & transload services, and more. With over 50 operations, we are the 3 largest locomotive fleet in Canada and growing!

Roles & Responsibilities

• Inspects locomotive, diagnose issues, make recommendations as to course of action and repair/recondition as needed
• Perform scheduled preventative maintenance and inspections on locomotives in accordance with company and regulatory standards
• Track all inspections and repair/maintenance work performed; completes all required logs
• Repair and replace components including engines, braking systems, wheels, bearings, couplers, fuel systems and other components.
• Perform major mechanical repairs and engine overhauls.
• Interpret technical drawings and schematics
• Maintains and cares for all work areas, vehicles, and tools used to perform the locomotive and equipment servicing

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities

• Ability to independently plan, organize, and prioritize workload
• Strong mechanical aptitude with demonstrated experience in heavy equipment repair.
• Ability to lift/push/pull a minimum of fifty (50) pounds and to maneuver in/through/around equipment easily and safely
• Ability to meet Workplace Safety & Health standards
• Proficient with tools, test equipment and safe shop practices
• General computer skills with ability to learn new processes
• Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license
• Ability to work indoors/outdoors in all weather conditions
• Willingness to address emergency service problems at any time of day or night

Education & Experience

• Diesel, automotive or heavy equipment experience.
• Experience working in heavy industrial environments and with similar equipment
