Job summary

Calgary Co-op is seeking a Store Manager for our Wine Spirits Beer location in Calgary. You will oversee daily operations, drive service quality, manage budgets, and ensure profitability while upholding company standards and policies.

Your leadership will shape a high‑performing liquor team, align merchandising with brand guidelines, schedule staff, and maintain compliance with Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission rules. Previous wine and spirits retail experience is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 education.
  • Two years retail supervisory experience.
  • WSET Level 2 (desirable).
  • Retail wine and spirits experience (desirable).
  • Two years retail management experience (desirable).

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily store management in line with policies and expectations.
  • Provide feedback and action plans to improve store operations.
  • Lead a positive, motivated team within the liquor store.
  • Drive achievement of store budget objectives in sales, margins and inventory.
  • Schedule staff to meet sales needs and ensure proper staffing.
  • Maintain merchandising standards and adherence to company programs.
  • Ensure compliance with Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission guidelines.
  • Manage price lists, inventories, and receiving records.

Reporting to the Wine Spirits Beer Operations Manager, the

Reporting to the Wine Spirits Beer Operations Manager, the Store Manager will be responsible for the overall operation of their Co‑op Wine Spirits Beer location to improve service, program execution and company profitability. This includes scheduling, appraisals, budgeting and attainment of financial results. Other responsibilities include the overall management of image and standards, implementation and adherence to company programs, policies and procedures as well as human resources related activities.

Responsibilities
  • The ongoing overseeing of the daily store management ensuring operation and management in accordance with company policies, procedures and overall expectations.
  • Provide ongoing written and verbal feedback to the Operations Manager regarding recommendations for continued improvement of store operations. Where necessary, develop and administer mini‑action plans for desired results.
  • Demonstrate and provide ongoing professional leadership that creates a positive/harmonious working environment within the centre.
  • Provide direction and leadership to the store team toward building an ongoing positive, highly motivated, work force within the liquor store.
  • Provide leadership and direction in the development and achievement of store budget objectives in the areas of sales, margins, expenses, profits, EHP and inventory turns.
  • Schedule staff according to sales needs, ensuring that EHP is adhered to.
  • Ensure the store’s merchandising standards are being managed and maintained in accordance to company expectations.
  • Ensure company programs are being implemented and managed in accordance to company expectations.
  • Ensure ongoing creative merchandising that creates a “WOW” image in the consumer’s mind.
  • Ensure the store’s housekeeping, sanitation and maintenance schedules/standards are managed and being maintained in accordance to company expectations.
  • Directly responsible to ensure the store adheres to Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission operating guidelines.
  • Ensure the store adheres to government regulations in the area of labeling, pricing, sanitation and food safety.
  • Attend and actively participate in commodity, labour management and Occupational Health and Safety meetings.
  • Provide information, assistance and courteous service to customers.
  • Plan and schedule staff requirements according to sales.
  • Order products and supplies according to needs using approved suppliers.
  • Use proper storage and handling for all inventories.
  • In conjunction with Category Management Team, keep pricing and costing files up‑to‑date.
  • Take inventories and extend as per company schedules and policies.
  • Maintain receiving records and approve all invoices in accordance to company policy and procedures.
  • Make requests to the Operations Manager for any necessary equipment or changes to liquor department.
  • Assume responsibility for maintenance of price lists as provided by Head Office.
  • Ensure confidentiality regarding pricing, financial and marketing strategies and Human Resources related information.
  • Directly responsible for employee relations, including hiring, training and development, performance management and expectations, discipline, recognition, policy and procedure development, administration and enforcement, terminations, security and union contract compliance.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Grade 12 education
  • Two (2) years retail supervisory experience
Desirable Qualifications
  • Retail wine and spirits experience
  • Business‑related experience
  • Two (2) years retail management experience
  • WSET Level 2
