Job summary

Thales Canada is seeking a Naval Architect Technologist / Life Cycle and Materiel Manager (LCMM) to support its Non-Combatant In-Service Support for the Royal Canadian Navy. This hybrid role can be located in Malahat, BC, and involves technical oversight of hull systems and fittings on AOPS/JSS ships.

You will liaise with Engineering Services Manager and teams to establish the design intent, maintain configuration, perform risk assessments, and support changes.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2-year technical diploma in Naval Architecture or other marine technical field or Canadian Armed Forces trades.
• 8+ years of demonstrated technical experience in the marine/offshore sector within the last 10 years.
• Strong knowledge of hull systems, deck equipment and marine structures is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical support for hull systems deficiencies and risk assessments.
• Advise on operation and maintenance of hull systems, fittings and deck equipment.
• Investigate problems related to hull and marine systems, including failure analysis and recommendations.
• Develop and review technical documents: specs, installation/maintenance instructions, tests and drawings.
• Address obsolescence and material compatibility with alternative part assessments.
• Analyze changes to ship configuration, equipment and software requirements.
• Prepare work packages and cost estimates for customer approval.
• Coordinate with OEMs, service providers, ship staff and Thales service delivery on defects.
• Prepare scopes for quotations from external resources (OEMs, manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities).
• Support design/configuration control of hull and marine systems including audits and deviations.
• Participate in structural/damage surveys to aid repair specifications.
• Support Classification Society surveys and other certifications.
• Support software management including software changes.

Position Summary

Naval Architect Technologist / Life Cycle and Materiel Manager (LCMM)

Thales Canada is looking for a Naval Architect Technologist / Life Cycle and Materiel Manager (LCMM) to support its Non-Combatant In-Service Support Programs for the Royal Canadian Navy.

The Naval Architect Technologist / LCMM is responsible for engineering and technical oversight of various hull systems and fittings on board the AOPS and JSS class ships. Accountable to the Engineering Services Manager and working directly with the Engineering and Supportability Team, this role will support various naval architecture activities to establish and maintain the configuration and design intent of the ship's hull systems and fittings and support any changes.

The successful candidate will leverage their existing knowledge and expertise in hull systems and equipment to provide subject matter expertise and become the main point of contact for all technical matters associated with the systems assigned thereto.

Regulatory Compliance Requirement

This position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software or technical information controlled under the Canadian Export Control List and/or the US the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). All applicants must be eligible or able to obtain authorization for such access.

Key Areas of Responsibility

• Providing technical support of deficiencies of equipment or capability, developing technical solutions and risk assessments.
• Providing technical advice to enable hull systems, fittings and deck equipment to be correctly operated or maintained.
• Conducting technical investigations into problems associated with hull and other marine systems, equipment and/or software issues, including failure analysis and solution recommendation.
• Developing and reviewing technical documentation including equipment specifications, installation and maintenance instructions, test and trials agendas, and engineering change documentation and drawings.
• Investigating and formulating plans to deal with equipment obsolescence and material compatibility issues, conducting alternate part assessments and recommendations.
• Analyzing requirements associated with baseline changes to the ships configuration, equipment and software.
• Preparing Work Packages and cost estimates for customer approval.
• Liaise with OEMs, Service Providers, Ship Staff and Thales Service Delivery to support the investigation and resolution of defects.
• Preparing documented work scopes, suitable for the solicitation of quotations from external resources such as OEMs, manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities or specialist service providers.
• Supporting and managing activities associated with the design and configuration control of ship's hull and other marine systems and fittings including conducting functional and physical configuration audits, and deviations and waivers documentation and risk assessments.
• Participate / conduct structural and damage surveys to assist in the development of repair specifications.
• Supporting Classification Society surveys and other certification approvals.
• Supporting software management activities including software changes.

Minimum Requirements

• Minimum post high school education requirements: Minimum 2-year Technical Diploma in Naval Architecture or other marine technical field offered by a recognized technical institute; or Certified as one of the following trades of the Canadian Armed Forces: Marine Technician RQ-PO1 or RQ-PO2, QL7 Marine Engineer, QL 6A or 6B Hull Technician
• Possess a minimum of 8 years of demonstrated technical professional work experience in the marine/offshore sector within the last 10 years.

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong working knowledge in the maintenance, operation, design, troubleshooting and/or repair of a wide range of hull and marine systems, including mooring and anchoring systems, outfittings, marine structure and coatings, propulsion systems, lifesaving equipment, and lifting appliances.
• Previous experience with the Royal Canadian Navy or Canadian Coast Guard.
• Previous experience as a Life Cycle Materiel Manager with hull and/or other marine systems.
• Demonstrated project management experience.
• Experience in delivering marine in-service support of operational assets.
• Familiar with certification requirements including but not limited to Classification Society, SOLAS/IMO, IEEE, CSA, Naval Ship Code, and DND regulations is an asset.

Physical Demands

• Predominantly office work but will be required to occasionally travel to and work in dockyards and onboard Naval ships.
• May be required to undertake inspections on Naval ships which may involve involving bending and twisting, and working aloft.

Special Position Requirements

• Schedule: 40 hours per week.
• Travel: Occasional domestic or international travel may be required in support of the ships.

The reference Total Target Compensation (TTC) market range for this position, inclusive of annual base salary and the variable compensation target, is between Total Target Cash (TTC) $90,000 - $100,000 -$115,000 CAD Annual.
