Position Summary

Do you have a passion for nursing? We have the position for you! We are seeking a motivated Licensed Practical Nurse with a dedication for delivering compassionate patient care to join our team at Wrinch Memorial Hospital.

Working within an interdisciplinary clinical framework in accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) Standards of Practice for a Licensed Practical Nurse and consistent with the mission, vision and values and established protocols of Northern Health, the LPN works closely with the care team in direct care activities such as assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating interventions, and coordinating health services for the Emergency Department patients. They participate in discharge and/or care planning, function as a patient advocate, and teach patients and their families about illness/injury and overall health promotion and wellness.

The LPN enhances quality of life from the perspective of the patient/family, establishes, maintains, and enhances therapeutic relationships based on respect, and through a team‑based model provides care to patients across the lifespan and their families. They respond to unexpected patient outcomes by communicating and collaborating with other members of the healthcare team. The LPN documents care provided and responses to incidents in accordance with established policies, procedures, and Emergency Department expectations, and consults, confers, and collaborates with other health care providers as needed.

Shift Rotation/Hours of Work

Days, Nights, 07:00 to 19:00, 19:00 to 07:00 (rotating)

Wrinch Memorial Hospital

Wrinch Memorial hospital is a teaching hospital with ongoing rotation of Medical Students, Nurse Practitioner Students, and Medical Residents. It serves a population of 8,000 patients with the following services:

  • Nine complex care beds
  • One respite bed
  • 13 acute care beds
  • Dental clinic
  • Laboratory
  • Wrinch Medical Clinic
  • One secure psychiatric observation room
  • Medical imaging, including ultrasound
  • Retail pharmacy on‑site

Qualifications
  • Graduation from a recognized program for Practical Nurses and one (1) year recent experience working in a related area of care.
  • Current practicing registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrate ability in nursing practice related to caring for patients in the Emergency Department (e.g., those across the lifespan with stable and predictable states of health, including complex disease, acute/chronic disease management, mental health, and substance use issues).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of pathophysiology related to common diagnoses across the designated patient group (e.g., malignancies, acute/chronic respiratory illness, renal and hepatic failure, chronic wounds, orthopedic injuries, mental health and substance use issues).
  • Demonstrated ability to perform nursing assessments and interventions related to common diagnoses and specific clinical situations relevant to the designated patient group.
  • Demonstrate sound clinical judgement to provide safe, ethical patient care, and access appropriate resources embedded within the service delivery model.
  • Recognize potential complications and care issues relevant to the designated patient group, and effectively manage conflict situations and aggressive behavior with non‑violent crisis intervention and behavioral management techniques specific to the Emergency Department.
  • Proficiency in using equipment (oxygen delivery, vital signs monitors, glucometer, IV pumps, splints, dressings, walking aids, and other related equipment).
  • Document patient care on appropriate systems/forms in accordance with organizational and unit standards in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Provide safe and appropriate telephone consultations, documenting related discussions and patient care on appropriate systems/forms.
  • Expertise in patient/family‑centered care planning, patient/family engagement, trauma‑informed care, and therapeutic communication, with knowledge of legislation, government policies, and procedures as they apply to patient and staff rights.
  • Demonstrate skill in applying the LPN scope of practice and standards of care relevant to the Emergency Department, including infection control, violence prevention, collaboration, communication, and patient flow.
  • Physical ability to perform the position.
