Job description

Position Overview

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. The commitment to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Under the supervision of the Manager or designate, and as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Licensed Practical Nurse, Full Scope, performs assessments, plans and provides personal care, and executes nursing procedures. The role operates within the competency guidelines and full scope of practice as defined by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, along with agency policies, standards, and unit-specific protocols.

Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience

  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing LPN registrant.
  • Perinatal positions require either (a) completion of a perinatal education program plus breastfeeding course; or (b) one year of recent (within the last 2 years) acute perinatal experience. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification within the past 2 years is also required for perinatal roles.
  • MHSU positions require additional education as specified by BCCNM for practice involving primary diagnoses of Mental Health and/or Substance Use disorders.
Skills and Abilities
  • Effective verbal and written communication with residents, families, colleagues, and the public.
  • Ability to deal effectively with others.
  • Organizational skills to implement a care plan.
  • Knowledge and competencies to work at full scope of practice, including medication administration.
  • Proficiency with operating related equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
