Job summary

Optima Living is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse to join our care team, reporting to the Director of Care. The role emphasizes resident-centered care, collaboration with doctors and families, and maintaining a respectful, safe environment for residents and staff.

The LPN will administer medications, support care plans, and mentor Health Care Aides while ensuring compliance with safety, infection control, and privacy regulations. A current Alberta license and CPR/First Aid are required.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an approved school of nursing.
  • Maintains a current license to practice from the AB College of Registered Nurses (CRNA) & College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA).
  • Experience in a residential care environment is an asset.
  • Maintains CPR and First Aid certification.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct nursing care including administration of medications and treatments.
  • Maintains accurate records of resident conditions and health care requirements.
  • Assists with move ins/outs, palliative care, and end-of-life care with dignity.
  • Directs and mentors Health Care Aides in standard nursing procedures.
  • Participates in nursing and care conferences and interdisciplinary teamwork.
  • Responds to emergencies and adheres to infection control and safety protocols.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Care, the Licensed Practical Nurse collaborates with other team members to provide high quality care and services to residents. This role contributes to fostering a respectful, positive, and safe environment for residents, families, and team members.

All duties and responsibilities are carried out in alignment with Optima Living’s mission, vision, and values, promoting person-centered care by respecting the uniqueness, dignity, and self-determination of residents to promote maximum personal and functional independence. These duties are performed within the framework of established organizational policies and procedures, industry best practices, while adhering to applicable regulations and standards.

Responsibilities
  • Participates in the development of resident personal care or service plans under the direction of the Director of Care or designate.
  • Recommends and implements changes to resident personal care or service plans as needed.
  • Maintains accurate records of resident conditions and health care requirements and other pertinent documentation.
  • Assists with move ins, move outs, palliative care, end of life and care after death by ensuring that comfort and dignity are maintained.
  • Provides direct nursing care including administration and/or distribution of medications, medical treatments and procedures, and resident education as needed.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with the interdisciplinary team, supervisor(s), doctors, residents and families.
  • Assists the physician with examinations, diagnostic tests and therapeutic measures when requested by the Director of Care or designate.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of nursing care treatments and informs the Director of Care or designate and/or the resident’s physician of significant changes in the condition of any resident.
  • Directs, supports and assists Health Care Aides in the use of appropriate procedures ensuring the provision of a high standard of resident care.
  • Assists in the orientation of new team members under the direction of the Director of Care or designate ensuring their performance is monitored, corrected and evaluated.
  • Identifies and reports malfunctioning equipment for repair or replacement.
  • Reports clinical supply needs to the Director of Care or designate.
  • Completes internal and external incident reports in a timely manner.
  • Attends and contributes to nursing and general team member meetings as well as resident care conferences as needed.
  • Promptly reports unsafe conditions, incidents, or concerns to supervisor, General Manager or Health & Safety Committee.
  • Identifies maintenance issues and reports them following established maintenance procedures.
  • Responds promptly during emergency codes in alignment with organizational standards and protocols.
  • Contributes to quality improvement initiatives by sharing ideas and providing feedback.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
  • Ensures adherence to infection control policies and procedures through regular audits, observations, and investigations.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of resident medical and personal information in accordance with privacy legislation.
  • Completes orientation upon hire and annual mandatory education as assigned.
  • Supports new team members through their orientation process.
  • Respects and upholds the Resident Bill of Rights and the Assisted Living Rights of Residents.
  • Participates in team meetings and stays informed on relevant internal communications.
  • Performs other duties as required to support operational needs.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Graduate from an approved school of nursing.
  • Maintains a current license to practice from the AB College of Registered Nurses (CRNA) & College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA).
  • Experience in a residential care or mental health environment is an asset.
  • Maintains an active CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Demonstrates the skills and attributes to guide and mentor Health Care Aides and other non-professional team members.
  • Demonstrates a therapeutic approach to the delivery of care.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Communicates in an approachable and respectful manner with the temperament to deal tactfully and cooperatively in all interactions.
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to present professional documents with clarity.
  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively organize, prioritize and problem solve.
  • Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others.
  • Ability to manage and resolve difficult and challenging situations effectively and respectfully.
  • Physical and mental ability to carry out the duties of the position including adherence to provincial health legislation.
  • Ability to safely operate equipment according to established protocols.
  • Flexibility to work a variety of shifts.
