Job description

We are currently seeking a hardworking and detail-oriented Licensed Paralegal to join our talented team of legal professionals in the Small Claims Court department of our Creditors’ Rights practice group. This position is to provide a 12-month Parental Leave coverage. This practice group is focused on the recovery of outstanding debt on behalf of financial institutions and experience in this area of law is a definite asset.

Responsibilities
  • Reviewing matters, drafting pleadings, motions and correspondence
  • Reviewing files to determine whether legal action is necessary
  • Attending settlement conferences, terms of payment hearings, motions and trials
  • Conducting judgement debtor examinations and attending contempt hearings
  • Reporting to clients and providing opinion with respect to issues
  • Conducting legal research
  • Other related duties as required and assigned
Qualifications
  • Licensed Paralegal (P1) and member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
  • 1 to 3 years of experience attending Small Claims Court and a strong understanding of the Rules of Civil Procedure and the Rules Of The Small Claims Court
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in Creditors’ Rights law preferredFile management experience required along with experience working on bank files
  • Ability to review and apply relevant legislation
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle to use for attendance at court within the GTA and occasionally for travel up to 2 hours from Toronto for court hearings
  • Exceptional computer skills (proficiency in Microsoft Office, PC Law, ACL)
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Personable, approachable and a strong team player
  • The ability to prioritize tasks and work effectively under pressure in a high-volume environment, while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines
  • Strong work ethic
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

A satisfactory criminal records check will be required from the selected candidate as a condition of employment.
