Cozen OConnor is seeking a motivated full-time Legal Assistant to support the Litigation and Bankruptcy practices in our Toronto office. This is a great opportunity to support three lawyers on sophisticated matters working as part of a dynamic team.

This is a hybrid role with 3 days per week required. Requirements may evolve over time and the role may require work outside of standard business hours to support operational needs.

Responsibilities
  • Communicates effectively with court staff to schedule and confirm case conferences, motions and other court appearances.
  • Organizes and effectuates the service of pleadings and key documents including process service.
  • Files court documents using the Justice Services Online (JSO) platform and the Ontario Courts Public Portal (OCPP).
  • Assists with drafting pleadings including Affidavits of Service, Affidavits of Documents, Bills of Costs, Notices of Appearance, Notices of Change and Compendiums.
  • Arranges and books discoveries and mediations.
  • Completes all New Business Intakes (NBIs) including Know Your Client requirements and prepares engagement letters.
  • Liaises directly with clients and third parties upon direction of supervising lawyers.
  • Conducts various searches including corporate, PPSA, bankruptcy and insolvency, and title / property.
  • Maintains lawyers calendars and assists with scheduling meetings, events and business development lunches.
  • Processes all business expenses and invoices, travel receipts and professional association dues.
  • Coordinates with billing, finance, accounts receivable and escrow teams to facilitate the processing of client accounts.
Qualifications
  • Paralegal, law clerk and/or legal assistant diploma required.
  • 3-5 years of litigation and law firm experience preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Provincial and Federal Courts as well as the Rules of Civil Procedure.
  • Experience supporting multiple lawyers, preferably in different practice areas.
  • Advanced skills in Adobe Pro, Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams), Case Center, CaseMap, Chrome River and Zoom.
  • Foreign law degree considered an asset.
  • Experience working in bankruptcy and familiarity with the Commercial List considered an asset.
