Purpose

The Lead Instrumentation Engineer provides technical leadership and project delivery oversight for instrumentation and control (I&C) engineering services in support of Worley and its customers. This role is accountable for leading small to medium‑size I&C teams, coordinating discipline activities, and ensuring high‑quality, safe, and compliant engineering deliverables are executed on time and within budget. The Lead Instrumentation Engineer acts as a key interface between the project team, discipline leadership, and the client, supporting successful project execution across the full project lifecycle, from concept and detailed engineering through construction and commissioning.

Project & Technical Leadership
  • Lead instrumentation and controls engineering execution on assigned projects, ensuring alignment with project scope, schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
  • Provide day‑to‑day technical direction to a team of Instrumentation Engineers and Designers, including task assignment, technical oversight, and progress monitoring.
  • Serve as the primary I&C discipline interface with Project Management, other engineering disciplines, and client stakeholders.
  • Support project planning activities, including development of execution strategies, resourcing plans, and workshare models where appropriate.
  • Ensure engineering activities are executed in accordance with Worley management systems, applicable codes and standards, and client specifications.
  • Proactively manage scope changes in accordance with approved change management processes and communicate impacts to schedule and budget.
Engineering Delivery
  • Oversee the development and checking of instrumentation and control engineering deliverables, including:
    • P&IDs, control narratives, cause & effect diagrams
    • Instrument specifications and datasheets
    • I/O lists and control system architecture
    • Loop diagrams, wiring and termination drawings
    • Junction box and marshalling cabinet layouts
    • Motor control and interlock schematics
    • Installation details and construction work packages
  • Provide technical input into procurement activities, including preparation of requisitions, technical bid evaluations, vendor data reviews, and purchase order support.
  • Support construction, commissioning, and startup activities, including resolution of field queries, technical deviations, and commissioning support as required.
  • Ensure technical integrity of designs through participation in internal reviews, interdisciplinary reviews, and client design reviews.
Team Leadership & Development
  • Coach and mentor junior and intermediate Instrumentation Engineers and Designers, supporting their technical development and professional growth.
  • Foster a collaborative, safety‑focused, and high‑performance team culture aligned with Worley values.
  • Support workload forecasting and resource coordination with the I&C Department Manager.
  • Promote knowledge sharing, best practices, and continuous improvement within the instrumentation discipline.
Stakeholder & Interface Management
  • Maintain effective working relationships with project stakeholders, discipline leads, vendors, and clients.
  • Participate in project meetings, progress reviews, and technical workshops.
  • Identify technical risks and execution challenges, develop mitigation strategies, and escalate issues as appropriate.
Technical & Industry Experience
  • Strong working knowledge of instrumentation and control system design for industrial facilities, including oil & gas, energy, chemicals, mining, and/or infrastructure projects.
  • Experience participating in or supporting HAZOP, LOPA, SIL, and other process safety and risk reviews.
  • Solid understanding of scope definition, work breakdown, and task delegation across engineering phases (FEL, detailed engineering, construction support).
  • Working knowledge of common instrumentation technologies and selection, including:
    • Flow measurement (orifice, vortex, venturi, magnetic, ultrasonic)
    • Level measurement (radar, guided wave radar, displacers, gauges)
    • Temperature measurement (including thermowell design and wake frequency calculations)
    • Pressure measurement and control
  • Familiarity with engineering data management systems and project delivery tools (e.g., SAP, document management systems, engineering databases).
Qualifications & Experience
  • Currently holds Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration with APEGA.
  • Accredited bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Instrumentation, Mechanical, or equivalent).
  • Extensive experience in instrumentation and controls engineering within an EPC/EPCM or owner/operator environment.
  • Demonstrated experience leading small to medium‑size engineering teams on multi‑discipline projects.
  • Strong understanding of applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent communication, coordination, and stakeholder management skills.
