Job summary

The Township of Langley is seeking a regular full-time Lead Hand Guard to join the RCMP Division, Police Services Department. Reporting to the Manager, Business Support Police Services, this role guards prisoners and provides training to Cells staff, coordinating coverage during unplanned absences.

Responsibilities include supervising shifts, maintaining security, taking fingerprints and photos, and ensuring safety through disciplined procedures.

Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent with related experience.
• Knowledge of custody and prisoner welfare procedures.
• Ability to train staff and coordinate shift coverage.
• BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence is an asset.
• RCMP Enhanced Reliability Status required upon consideration.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate shift coverage during unplanned absences.

• Order supplies as required.
• Maintain surveillance over prisoner activities for safety.
• Search and inspect cells before/after occupancy.
• Assist officers during prisoner arrivals/departures.

• Maintain security of prisoner property and arrange for dispatch of property.
• Monitor cleaning and cell decontamination.
• Maintain prisoner logbooks and records.
• Assist in processing prisoners as required.

Pay Rate: $30.39 - $35.61 per hour (5 steps, 2026 rates) plus benefits

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week on a weekly rotation shift; Non-standard hours and/or non/standard work week

One week of days Monday to Friday 6:00am – 2:00pm;

One week of afternoons Monday to Friday 2:00pm – 10:00pm;

Job Overview

The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for a regular full-time Lead Hand Guard to join our team of professionals in the RCMP Division, Police Services Department. Reporting to the Manager, Business Support Police Services, in this unionized position you will perform custodial work involving responsibility for guarding prisoners held at the Langley Detachment. The Lead Hand Guard provides training to employees working in Cells and coordinates staffing coverage during unplanned absences.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate shift coverage during unplanned absences
• Train, schedule and approve leave for guards to ensure operational requirements are met
• Order supplies as required
• Maintain surveillance over prisoner activities to ensure safety and security
• Search and inspect cells before and after prisoner occupancy
• Assist officers or Deputy Sheriffs during the arrival and departure of prisoners
• Take fingerprints and photographs of prisoners and members of the public
• Maintain the security of prisoner’s property and arrange for dispatch of property left behind
• Monitor cleaning by janitors, sweep, mop, hose and disinfect cells, and immediate areas
• Maintain a variety of files, records, and the prisoner logbook
• Assist members in processing prisoners, as required
• Perform related duties as required

Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 12, and some related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
• Sound knowledge of the policies, practices, methods, and procedures related to the control, custody, escorting and welfare of prisoners
• Sound knowledge of techniques used for taking fingerprints and photographs
• Ability to train employees and schedule shift coverage as required
• Ability to understand and respond to prisoners' needs while communicating with firmness, discretion, and compassion
• Ability to assess and respond appropriately to individuals experiencing mental, physical, or emotional distress
• BC Class 5 (full privilege) Driver’s License is considered an asset

RCMP Enhanced Reliability Status is required (not required as part of the application process, however, will be required upon consideration for employment).

Required Certifications/Licenses

• Basic (Emergency) First Aid with CPR C and AED Certification
