Job summary

Russel Metals in Winnipeg, MB is seeking a reliable Lead Hand for the fabrication and metals warehouse facilities. You will provide day-to-day direction, assign work, and coordinate priorities to support productivity and safety.

Initially a day-shift role with transitions to rotating shifts based on production levels. This safety‑sensitive position requires a pre‑employment medical and drug evaluation and a strong commitment to quality and company procedures.

Qualifications

  • Experience in metals fabrication, steel service, warehouse, manufacturing, or a similar industrial environment.
  • Lead Hand or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Forklift and overhead crane experience/certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of safe material-handling and rigging practices.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced industrial environment and at either Company facility as required.
  • Ability to meet all Company training, PPE, safety, quality, and operational requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Assign and prioritize daily work and monitor employee performance and productivity.
  • Provide direction, coaching, and training and escalation performance or conduct concerns to management.
  • Coordinate fabrication, warehouse, shipping, receiving, and material-handling activities.
  • Communicate production priorities, staffing needs, delays, and operational issues to management.
  • Ensure work is completed according to work orders, drawings, specifications, and Company procedures.
  • Lead safety culture, ensure compliance with safety policies and PPE requirements.
  • Identify unsafe conditions and stop work where hazards exist.
  • Report and assist with incidents, injuries, near misses, and property damage.
  • Maintain safe housekeeping and proper material handling and storage.
  • Safely operate forklifts, overhead cranes, and other authorized equipment.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a reliable and safety-focused Lead Hand for the Fabrication and Metals Warehouse Facilities in Winnipeg. This position will provided day-to-day direction and leadership to employees in the Company’s fabrication and warehouse operations. The role is responsible for assigning work, coordinating priorities, supporting productivity and quality, and ensuring operations are performed safely and efficiently.

Initially, this is a day-shift position that will turn into a rotating shift as business levels dictate, with employees rotating between day, evening, and night shifts according to the established production schedule.

Our work environment is safety sensitive and will require the successful applicant to undergo a pre-employment medical and drug evaluation.

Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Operations
  • Assign and prioritize daily work and monitor employee performance and productivity.
  • Provide direction, coaching, and training and escalation performance or conduct concerns to management.
  • Coordinate fabrication, warehouse, shipping, receiving, and material-handling activities.
  • Communicate production priorities, staffing needs, delays, and operational issues to management.
  • Ensure work is completed according to work orders, drawings, specifications, and Company procedures.
Health & Safety
  • Lead by example and promote a strong safety culture.
  • Ensure compliance with Company safety policies, procedures, PPE requirements, and applicable legislation.
  • Identify and address unsafe conditions and stop work where an immediate hazard exists.
  • Ensure employees are trained and authorized for assigned work and equipment.
  • Report and assist with investigations of incidents, injuries, near misses, and property damage.
  • Maintain safe housekeeping, material storage, traffic flow, and work areas.
  • Safely operate forklifts, overhead cranes, and other authorized equipment.
  • Coordinate the movement, loading, unloading, staging, and storage of steel and other materials.
  • Ensure lifting and rigging equipment is inspected and used properly.
  • Report damaged materials, equipment issues, inventory discrepancies, and other concerns.
Quality & Warehouse Support
  • Monitor product quality and identify non-conforming material or workmanship.
  • Support accurate receiving, picking, staging, shipping, inventory control, and material identification.
  • Assist with resolving routine production, equipment, material, and workflow issues.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in industrial fabrication and warehouse environments involving heavy materials, forklifts, overhead cranes, trucks, machinery, noise, dust, and varying temperatures. The position requires extended periods of standing and walking and the ability to perform physical material-handling tasks.

Accountability

The Lead Hand is accountable for effective front-line leadership, safe and efficient operations, product quality, production and warehouse support, and timely communication of operational concerns to management.
