Together, we pursue a shared mission to create a more sustainable future.

Job Description

The Lead Engineer (LE) is accountable for multi-disciplinary engineering deliverables to our customers for custom and extended municipal treatment systems. The LE is responsible for determining the required resources and guiding a multi-disciplinary team to ensure accuracy of design, scope, timeliness of submittals, adherence to the engineering budget, and quality.

The LE, Project Manager and Sourcing Project Leader form a project leadership team. This leadership team act together to support the job and deliver what was sold to our customers. This team works to manage the project in its entirety and generates and maintains critical project reporting.

Key Characteristics:

  • Broad responsibility to direct and monitor an engineering project team. This consists of Process, Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls engineers, as well as various project support functions (Document Control, Sourcing, Finance, etc).
  • The LE coordinates the delivery of all of the engineering output on their assigned projects. While the LE has a strong engineering background, it is key for an LE to be skilled at building teams, communicating a vision, and delegating work. This includes being an effective facilitator of project team meetings and deliverables, and as needed conflict resolution within the project team.
  • They are thoughtful, cooperative, and creative. They are able to handle multiple shifting demands with professionalism and good judgment. The LE is the face of Veolia Engineering.

Technical Leadership & Engineering Coordination:

  • Technical Solution Optimization: Identify and implement optimized technical solutions within contractual constraints.
  • Engineering Design & Calculations: Perform detailed technical calculations and selection for mechanical equipment and design, consistent with contractual scope.
  • Engineering Strategy Accountability: Own project engineering strategy, including staffing, scheduling, and outsourcing, when required.
  • Engineering Team Leadership: Lead and coordinate engineering team activities across all disciplines (Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, etc.). Support the Project Manager for engineering budget and resource optimization as needed.
  • Engineering Coordination Meetings: Lead technical coordination meetings and regular engineering team meetings, determining team member participation as needed.
  • Quality & Compliance: Ensure peer review is completed, and completion of all E-tables/Design Reviews are performed for all engineering disciplines.
  • Technical Activity Delegation: Assign and oversee technical activities across different engineering functions and disciplines.

Customer Interface & Technical Communication:

  • Primary Customer Technical Interface: Serve as technical lead for all customer engineering interactions, resolving technical issues directly (escalating to PM only when scope, schedule, or budget are affected).
  • Customer Approval Management: Drive customer approval of documentation and technical deliverables to maintain the project schedule.
  • Technical Submittal Coordination: Distribute and coordinate follow-up on customer comments for all engineering disciplines (Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, etc.) in coordination with the Document Controller.
  • Risk & Opportunity Management: Proactively identify technical risks and opportunities, working closely with the PM and Sourcing Project Leader.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong aptitude for planning, organizing, scheduling, assigning and evaluating the work of the assigned engineering team
  • Ability to communicate effectively internally across multiple functions and externally with project stakeholders
  • Ability to monitor the engineering budget and provide assistance to the project manager in controlling the budget.
  • Proven ability to lead, delegate and motivate the team
  • Risk identification and mitigation
  • Strong analytical skills to quickly assess obstacles and implement effective solutions
  • Strong attention to detail with focus on contractual compliance (scope, schedule and budget)

The role requires the ability to travel domestically and internationally 5-10% of the time

Qualifications
  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering field
  • Required: Five to eight years project experience in engineering or a related field
  • Prefered: Experience with EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction) contracts
  • Prefered: Professional Engineer’s License, or the ability to obtain one within 1 year
  • Preferred: Second language (French and/or Spanish) may be useful
