About the role

Reporting to the Regional Manager, this is a demanding yet rewarding role providing critical live coverage of crisis events occurring across the globe as part of our worldwide team, while helping lead and shape the direction of the Canada team.

The samdesk platform is an AII tool that is not only the first to break the news but also provides the information and context needed by today's Fortune 500 organizations in their growing business continuity needs. The alert you send to a user about an active shooter at a shopping mall may prompt them to advise nearby customers and employees to seek shelter, lock down stores and reroute deliveries away from the area. As such, our customers trust us to provide them with up-to-date and accurate information as fast as possible. It can be high pressure, but we provide a friendly, supportive team alongside the tools and training you need to succeed.

The role & who you are
  • You are someone who is curious, engaged and self motivated to meet samdesk’s high standard of direct user alerts
  • You enjoy actively collaborating with others, providing feedback, coaching and motivating others
  • You are interested in breaking news and current affairs and understand the value of social media newsgathering and fact-finding
  • samdesk can provide a life‑saving solution to our users, so an ability to remain calm and collected whilst making rapid decisions is critical to this role. You are comfortable identifying and giving direction to other team members about key priorities in a real‑time environment
  • You are a skilled multi‑tasker who can track several developing incidents at once and work in a busy breaking news environment
  • You are self‑motivated and confident working independently and remotely as part of a diverse, globally distributed team
  • You value accountability – both personal and collective – and ensure your team delivers on commitments with consistency and integrity
  • You bring a positive approach to your work and are open to adapting within a supportive team environment
What you’ll do
  • You’ll be responsible for overseeing the quality of our data output (alerts, content, information), and ensuring that what users see is timely and relevant
  • You will manage at least two analysts. Providing performance feedback, coaching and goal setting
  • You will hire, onboard and train new team members, in coordination with the training team
  • You’ll seek to quickly understand which events are of higher impact and relevance to our users, using a combination of your experience, judgement and our playbooks to prioritize
  • You’ll be responsible for collecting information in real‑time, corroborating it, and building out the breadth and depth of our real time coverage as a crisis unfolds
  • You’ll contribute to shared resources to improve our content and information discovery processes and foster collaboration on the team
  • In addition to real time events and managerial duties, you’ll be part of an internal working group focused on geopolitics, future planning and forecasting of potentially disruptive global events, or climate disasters
  • You will play a pivotal role in assisting in the day‑to‑day operations of your team by providing your teammates with real‑time feedback and guidance, assisting in scheduling and rostering, approving leave requests, acting as the liaison for interdepartmental requests when necessary, among other tasks
  • You will adhere to samdesk culture and company values, serving as a role model for others, in an effort to foster and protect a positive team culture

Although this is a remote role, you’ll work closely with teammates across the world. Whilst on shift you will connect with other analysts in real‑time via an audio call to promote fluid communication and ensure events are effectively monitored in real time.

We’re looking for someone with:
  • A relevant degree (political science, international relations, journalism etc) or demonstrated experience in preparing real‑time reports or analysis for crisis management or in a newsroom environment
  • Security Operations Center analyst, intelligence analyst, emergency dispatcher, breaking news/OSINT reporter etc

Salary:
  • $75,000 - $80,000 CAD per annum
Working hours and flexibility

We need to ensure continuous coverage of urgent emergencies, as such, this role requires you to be “plugged‑in” and working on our dashboard during your shift. This can mean organized break schedules and set shift times. In exchange, you rarely need to take your work home with you and you’ll never need to work unsociable hours.
