Arnold & Arnold is a small law firm in High River, which is 30 minutes south of Calgary, Alberta. We are hiring a lawyer, or an articling student, to establish a long-term career in the community. Lawyer Annual Salary: $85,000.00 (first-year lawyer), or more depending on experience

Articling Student Annual Salary: $65,000.00

Annual Bonuses: Depending on individual, department, and firm performance

Benefits: None

Vacation: Three weeks as accrued during the year and the firm is typically closed the last week of December depending on Land Titles Office’s schedule

Office Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., unless clients’ circumstances require appointments after regular hours

Start Date: As soon as possible

Work Location: In office at 16 – 2 Avenue SE, High River, Alberta

Skills and Requirements:
  • Ideally, two to five years of experience with real estate, wills, enduring powers of attorney, personal directives, estates, and small corporations
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
  • Licenced to practice law in Alberta, or entitled to be an articling student in Alberta
  • Applicants with a realtor licence will not be considered due to the conflict of interest
  • Committed to establishing a long-term career in a rural community

  • Strong interpersonal skills to serve a variety of clients and work well with the team
  • Self‑motivated and able to work in a fast‑paced environment, think critically, and solve complex problems

  • Review conveyancing, mortgage instructions, various searches, real property reports, compliance letters, advisory letters, corporate minute books, legislation, Land Titles Office’s manuals, and other documents
  • Review and draft contracts, mortgage and other security documents, trust letters, wills, enduring powers of attorney, personal directives, Grant of Probate or Administration applications, various corporate documents, and other documents
  • Notarize and commission documents
  • Well before client meetings, review documents drafted by paralegals for accuracy
  • Work with paralegals to ensure files are processed correctly from start to finish
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Draft and send various correspondence
  • High attention to detail
  • Highly organized, maintain a clean and tidy workspace, and prioritize a high volume of tasks to meet deadlines
  • Answer calls and emails from clients, realtors, lenders, lawyers, and others
  • Work with paralegals to report to clients and lenders accurately and on time
  • Complete other tasks as required by the managing lawyer
  • Full knowledge of Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Use Microsoft Outlook to schedule appointments and diarize important tasks
  • Ideally, experience with Lawyer Done Deal, LEAP, SPIN, Adobe PDF, FCT/LLC, and Surrogate Digital Service
  • A strong interest in eventually becoming a partner or purchasing the firm
