Job summary

Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) in Inuvik, NT, invites applications for a Language Instructor to support the Aboriginal Head Start Program. Under the guidance of the Program Coordinator, you will plan and implement daily cultural and language activities, assist with child care, and help deliver programming and operations.

ABOUT INUVIALUIT REGIONAL CORPORATION (IRC)

Established in 1984 to manage the settlement outlined in the Inuvialuit Final Agreement (IFA), Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) represents the collective interests of Inuvialuit. IRC’s goal is to continually improve the economic, social and cultural wellbeing of the Inuvialuit through implementation of the IFA and by all other available means. Through strong partnerships and community‑driven programs, the organization supports economic growth, cultural preservation and opportunities for current and future generations.

Inuvialuit beneficiaries directly control IRC and its subsidiaries through a democratic process of elected directors from each of the six community corporations with chairs at the IRC Board, a process originally outlined in the IFA.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the guidance of the Program Coordinator, the Language Instructor plans and implements daily cultural and language-based activities, assists with the care of the children, delivery of daily programming and operations of the facility for the Aboriginal Head Start Program.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must have:

  • Grade 12 Diploma
  • A minimum of two years experience, preferably in the Early Childhood field or in an education environment
  • Aboriginal Language Instructor/Early Childhood certificate or diploma
  • Strong oral communication skills, including the ability to listen actively, respond verbally in a manner that is clear and respectful
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to learn material
  • Ability to work on a number of tasks simultaneously, while prioritizing accordingly
  • Ability to demonstrate self-management and maintain composure, consistency, and patience in stressful situations

  • The position requires the completion of a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
  • The position requires the completion of a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Must have an up-to-date immunization in accordance with the NWT Immunization Schedule, an acceptable Tuberculosis Screening test and provide proof of this prior to start date.
