Job summary

Seabird Island Band is seeking a Land to Table Farm Assistant to join our team on the Tém:éxw li te Letam Farm during the peak growing season. You will work outdoors on crop production, field maintenance, and daily farm chores while learning sustainable farming practices.

Responsibilities

  • Planting and seeding, transplanting, and preparing planting beds.
  • Weeding, watering, mulching, pruning, trellising and pest monitoring.
  • Harvesting and packing produce for sale or storage.
  • Soil care through composting and soil amendments.
  • Set up and monitor irrigation, water crops by hand as needed.
  • Safely operate basic farm tools and maintain equipment.
  • Support upkeep of farm structures, fencing, paths, and storage areas.
  • Assist with washing, labeling, and organizing produce.

Job description

Position Summary

We are seeking a Land to Table Farm Assistant to join our team, working collaboratively to enhance farming operations and receiving training opportunities for individuals interested in agriculture, sustainability, environmental science, or land-based work.

Under the direction of the Acting Holistic Nutrition Wellness Lead, the Land to Table Farm Assistant provides culturally informed support for day-to-day operations on the Tém:éxw li te Letam Farm during the peak growing season. This role involves hands‑on and outdoors, focusing on crop production, field maintenance, and general farm upkeep. The Land to Table Farm Assistant will also engage in community relations activities to support clients and the community.

This is a term position with an end date of September 7th, with possibility of extension.

What you’ll do
Crop Production & Field Work
  • Planting: Assist with seeding, transplanting, and preparing planting beds.
  • Crop Maintenance: Perform weeding, watering, mulching, pruning, trellising, and pest monitoring to support healthy crop growth.
  • Harvesting: Harvest vegetables, fruits, or herbs according to quality standards; wash, sort, and pack produce for sale or storage.
  • Soil Care: Help with composting, soil amendments, and basic field preparation.
Farm Operations
  • Irrigation: Set up, monitor, and adjust irrigation systems; hand‑water crops as needed.
  • Tool & Equipment Use: Safely operate basic farm tools (hand tools, wheelbarrows, small equipment) and assist with routine cleaning and maintenance.
  • General Maintenance: Support upkeep of farm structures, fencing, pathways, and storage areas.
  • Help with produce washing, packing, labelling, and organizing.

  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting (20‑40 lbs), bending, kneeling, and working in varying weather conditions.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently or as part of a small team.
  • No prior farm experience required: training provided.
Working / Special Conditions
  • Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.
