Reporting Relationship
The Teacher reports to the Principal or Designate.
Position Summary
Providing educational programming and development to students at Lakeview School. Development of curriculum in accordance with ministry and recommendations from Principal or Director of Education. Interactions with consultants as it pertains to teaching duties. Participate in school events and functions.
Essential Functions
- Prepare lessons applicable to Grade assigned and per curriculum as set out by the Province and MFN.
- Work together with other members of the teaching staff and Principal to select current, appropriate teaching materials.
- Participate in all professional activity days or activities and continue to pursue personal education.
- Promote the Lakeview School Vision and Mission Statement, along with the MFN mission and vision.
- Maintain order and discipline in the classroom and throughout the school, following the school timetable and schedule approved by Chief and Council.
- Strengthen ties with the school’s educational partners, community, fellow staff members, parents, and students, recognizing each group’s role in education.
- Model behavior to support students’ understanding of wisdom, love, respect, bravery, honesty, humility, truth, and other teachings, and fully support the Ojibwe Language, Culture and Traditions.
- Regularly report each student’s progress to parents/guardians and the Principal through report cards and other means.
- Instill a love of learning while helping students recognize that learning is a gradual lifelong process.
- Ensure the learning environment for students is safe, healthy, and secure.
- Meet with the Principal, teacher assistant, and Language teachers regularly to ensure student needs are understood and met.
- Maintain an attendance record (including late) and a record of student progress.
- Work closely with staff to formulate an appropriate program of studies before the start of each school year; submit a ten‑month plan in September for discussion during the annual evaluation.
- Provide support and direction to the Teacher’s Assistant if applicable.
- Prepare daily lesson plans and detailed learning materials for absence coverage.
- Order supplies and keep prepared materials, texts, and resources on hand.
- Report maintenance and repair items to the Principal.
- Individualize programs to assist students with Special Needs and collaborate with the SERT Team.
- Help identify students who need Special Education assistance.
- Seek and employ teaching approaches and materials that enable each student to achieve the highest level of development.
- Care for students, treating them equally and fairly.
- Participate in extra‑curricular activities and, when needed, help organize those activities.
- Ensure students are supervised at all times while at school.
- Maintain balance and objectivity when topics such as race, politics, or religion arise.
- Participate in staff meetings, teacher training workshops, professional development days and language classes.
- Lead students in activities to promote their physical, mental, and social development and readiness for school.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
Preferred
Bachelor of Arts & Bachelor of Education with at least 2‑3 years of teaching experience.
Minimum
Valid Ontario College of Teachers Certificate and Undergraduate Degree.
Must be working to attain a Bachelor of Education Degree.
Must have knowledge of the culture, traditions, history, and customs of the Anishinaabe people.
Understanding and fluency in Anishinabemowin is a strong asset, or willingness to learn the language.
Conditions of Employment
Police VSS must be current thirty (30) days, original or certified copy.
