Job description

$32.04 per hour (with wage increments to a max of $36.06 per hour). Salary and wage increments are in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

Responsibilities
  • Provide laboratory support for first‑year astronomy labs (ASTR 1105 – Introduction to Astronomy) from January 5, 2026 to April 30, 2026.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and apparatus; perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Assist students in conducting laboratory experiments and in troubleshooting scientific equipment.
  • Prepare hands‑on laboratory instruction and demonstration for undergraduate physics courses.
  • Collaborate with faculty and department staff to schedule and coordinate laboratory sessions.
  • Work with students, faculty, administrators, staff, and the public in a courteous and effective manner, in person, in writing, and over the telephone.
  • Shifts may change depending on the department’s needs; positions are located at both the New Westminster and Coquitlam campuses.
  • Monitor compliance with safety policies and procedures in all laboratory activities.
Qualifications
  • B.Sc. in Physics from a recognized post‑secondary educational institution; an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
  • Good working knowledge of the English language (written and verbal).
  • Good working knowledge of course content; operation and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatus; modern techniques pertaining to the instruction of Physics courses.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate courteously and effectively in person, in writing and over the telephone with students, faculty, administrators, staff and the public.
  • Temporary part‑time (minimum 6 hours per week) position.
  • Regular hours of work are between 4:00 pm and 10:00 pm. Labs will be scheduled on Wednesday (Coquitlam) and/or Thursday (New Westminster) evenings and specific days will be assigned based on course scheduling requirements and staff availability.
