Job Description and Responsibilities

The laboratory supervisor manages the overall R&D laboratory operations through direct oversight of the R&D technologists. They collaborate with management to effectively allocate resources based on the business priorities and maintain the facilities and addition. The laboratory supervisor will also lead the R&D safety Pipe & Steel R&D maintains registration with ISO 9001 and as such the laboratory supervisor will assist the Quality Management Designate in overseeing the Quality Management System to ensure compliance. Finally the laboratory supervisor will assist management in achieving long term goals through identifying Capex needs developing their business cases and developing and maintaining laboratory resource management tools.

Supervising Technologist
  • Allocate resources based on the business priorities identified by the R&D management and oversee project tasks assigned to the team to completion.
  • Maintain the facilities and equipment.
Identifying Capex Needs and Developing Business Cases
  • Manage the R&D QMS program and ensure compliance with ISO 9001 while maintaining certification.
  • Develop and maintain laboratory resource management tools.
  • Provide support to all R&D research programs (namely Linepipe Steel and OCTG Long Products Plates) and the Rapid Response program.
  • Hire, train, develop, monitor and evaluate the performance of staff; review and recommend personnel actions for approval.
  • Lead the Safety program.
  • Lead the 6S program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • BS in Engineering (metallurgical / mechanical engineering preferred) or Engineering Technology Diploma with 10 years of relevant experience.
  • 5 years of experience coordinating teams/employees, preferably in an industrial setting.
  • ISO 9001 lead auditor / project management experience.
  • Knowledge of OH&S provincial and federal regulations, strong mechanical knowledge and experience in developing PM programs, strong organizational and communication skills, familiarity with project management and design software, experience working with a collective bargaining group.
  • Strong team leadership skills, ability to learn and take on new skills, self‑starter with ability to ensure projects are completed while balancing changing short‑term priorities.
