Your Opportunity

The APL Flow Cytometry Department at the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Center has an opportunity for a Laboratory Specialist-1. Under the direction of the Lab Director, Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Technologist II, Supervisor or Manager, this position is responsible for performing a variety of duties including, but not limited to, conducting specialized laboratory procedures, specimen analysis, result entry and report verification. Performs, reports and records complex, routine and specialized diagnostic procedures, tests, and examinations in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures to ensure a high quality, accurate, and timely result. Identify possible alternative approaches to standard methods to provide correct results when necessary. Reports unusual test findings and results to senior staff. Performs, troubleshoots, and documents quality control and assurance programs; reports abnormal control results to senior staff. Operates, maintains, and performs troubleshooting on instruments and procedures to ensure optimal function. Proven interpersonal, oral, and written communications skill in English with ability to build positive, collaborative working relationships with coworkers, clinicians, internal and external clients. Assists in the validation of procedures and instrumentation under the direction of the Lab Director/Lab Scientist as required. Monitors department supply inventory and acts appropriately to maintain. Participates in the training and orientation of students and staff. Contributes to ongoing improved operations of technical area.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor or Master of Science degree with a focus in Molecular or Cellular Biology

Additional Required Qualifications

Recent (with in 2 years) experience in a clinical lab setting. Understanding of principles of flow cytometry, immunology, hematology, and transplantation.

Preferred Qualifications

Equivalencies of education (eg. MLT Program) may be considered in lieu of degree program. Advanced knowledge of hematology, CD nomenclature, & hematopoietic disorders, cell differentiation, morphology, and physiology of leukocytes human cell biology. Experience with flow cytometers. Experience in interpretive reporting. Current or recent (within last 2 years) hematology experience. Experience in a clinical lab setting.
