Your Opportunity

Reporting to the Path Assistant II, MLT II and the Anatomical Pathology Supervisor, the Medical Laboratory Assistant I is responsible for performing a variety of duties including, but not limited to collections and/or specimen processing, quality management, troubleshooting, and general support. Collects and processes a variety of specimens in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures, as appropriate to their scope of work. Operates, maintains and performs troubleshooting on a variety of laboratory instruments and equipment. Performs quality control and quality assurance activities, calibrates instruments and maintains records as appropriate to their scope of work. Follows safety procedures and policies, uses personal protective equipment appropriately and identifies/reports unsafe conditions. Maintains a clean, safe and organized work area. Recognizes and assesses unusual or abnormal findings. Escalates problems, issues, and occurrences as required and documents appropriately. Identifies opportunities for safer practices and workflow improvement, and applies process improvement principles to support and make changes. Delivers customer focused service and provides reception, answers inquiries, and responds to requests for in information for patients and other health care providers. Performs administrative duties such as filing, faxing, reports distribution and archiving when required. Documents and participates in the training and orientation of students and staff. Monitors, orders, rotates, distributes and stores supplies as applicable. Performs other related duties as assigned.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications

Proficiency in data entry. Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology. Heavy lifting up to 25 lbs, capable of standing or walking for long periods. Able to work with and exposure to chemicals and gloves. Any Canadian equivalency to English 30 or 33 or CLBA score of Benchmark 8 completed within the last six months.

Preferred Qualifications

Anatomic Pathology experience within the last 2 years preferred. Basic LIS and Microsoft computer skills.
