A healthcare provider in Alberta is seeking a motivated Medical Laboratory Assistant I for the Westlock Healthcare Centre. The role involves providing high-quality laboratory services, including specimen handling and processing. Candidates should have completed an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent. Experience in a hospital setting is preferred. This temporary part-time position offers a competitive salary ranging from $23.72 to $29.56 per hour, with opportunities for training in phlebotomy and other laboratory practices.
The town of Westlock is located one hour north-west of Edmonton just north of the continental divide between the Athabasca and North Saskatchewan River basins, and to the east of the Pembina River. Westlock has over 4800 residents and offers many amenities for individuals and families alike. Residents and visitors enjoy an Aquatic Centre, outdoor skating rink, off‑leash Dog Park, Skateboard Park, various sports facilities, Rotary Walking Trail and numerous parks and open spaces. Not to mention the Thunder Lake Provincial Park, offering boat access, campgrounds, and much more, is only 45 minutes away. The proximity to multiple rivers offers fishing and water sport opportunities as well. With the Westlock Country Jamboree, Blue Suede Music Festival, community Farmers Market and other events throughout the year, many are choosing the Westlock region for their weekend activities. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I at the Westlock Healthcare Centre you will gain experience in inpatient and outpatient collections, specimen handling and processing (including send outs) and performing urinalysis, ECG and Holter monitors.
As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.
Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
Equivalency is defined as completion of a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) and/or Combined Laboratory and X‑ray Technologist (CLXT) program in Canada; completion of a Medical Lab Technician/Technologist program outside of Canada; and/or MLT or CLXT students who have completed their phlebotomy training/rotation. Applicants with a high school diploma may be considered. Upon hire, you will be required to complete on‑the‑job phlebotomy training provided by APL at no cost, and formal training courses offered by SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) or NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology). The costs associated with these formal training courses will be your responsibility. You will be required to complete these training requirements within your probationary period, as per the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) collective agreement.
Medical laboratory assistant (or equivalent) experience in a hospital setting. Experience performing urinalysis, ECGs and Holter Monitors.
