Lab Technician/Administrative Assistant for School of Health Sciences
Part Time Fixed Term position. Under the direction of the Manager, Clinical Placements, this role collaborates with several programs in the School of Health Sciences (SoHS) to set annual priorities and meet emerging needs throughout the semester.
Specific Duties
- In consultation with faculty, prepare “set‑up” for lab demonstrations, procedures, training and testing of students; utilize timetables, course syllabi, and lab manuals to set out, maintain, and cleanup teaching supplies and equipment.
- Maintain laboratory, equipment, instruments, laundry and work areas in a clean, workable and safe condition; dispose of or arrange disposal of biohazardous waste.
- Assist with equipment repairs and preventive/regular maintenance requests as necessary.
- Set up and maintain inventory control system and records for laboratory equipment and learning supplies.
- Source and order learning items not classified as equipment.
- Assess and identify the need for new equipment or capital supplies before yearly budget preparation; submit business case(s) to the Manager, Clinical Placements.
- Assist with procurement of capital supplies.
- Assist program instructors with quality control procedures and required documentation.
- Prepare and maintain procedure manuals, inventory logbooks and maintenance logs for instruments and equipment to meet Program Review and accreditation requirements.
- Maintain the quality of instructional collections and monitor equipment, prep and lab area for safety and general functioning.
- Monitor WHMIS and biosafety compliance, keep inventory of controlled products, maintain MSDS records, and ensure correct labelling.
- Supervise students in daily quality control procedures and lab safety.
- Acquire quotes, submit requisitions and secure service agreement contracts for equipment.
- Distribute, maintain and track learning aids loaned to students.
- Track monthly supply budget for assigned Health Science programs.
- Keep track of fees, refunds and paperwork for students’ supplies, learning aids and safety devices, including students who may return to the program if they exited early.
Additional Duties
- Assist program coordinator(s) in organizing program information sessions for potential applicants.
- Assist program coordinator(s) in organizing student application procedures (e.g., schedule interviews, set up interview rooms, and documentation).
- Assist with data entry related to clinical placement as needed.
- Collect fees from students for required items; submit them to Financial Services.
- Manage radiation dosimeter distribution and collection; communicate with the National Dosimetry Service and ensure compliance with Radiation Safety procedures.
- Assist with invigilation of exams and surveys as needed.
- Set up and take down classroom for exams, including pre‑ and post‑terms.
- Design, distribute and compile survey results in compliance with institutional, school, and program policies.
- Maintain visual displays in Health Sciences classrooms and labs.
- Arrange printing of various manuals.
- Compile clinical materials for student practicums.
- Compile and distribute minutes as necessary.
- Attend School of Health Sciences meetings as required.
- Ensure confidentiality of records and appropriate disposal as required.
- Assist with accreditation processes as required.
- Contribute to and accomplish the vision, mission, and goals of the College and support the aspirations of learners.
- Promote a positive work atmosphere by interacting and communicating professionally with students and colleagues.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Skills & Qualifications
- Recognized two‑year diploma in a related health science discipline.
- Three (3) or more recent years of related work experience in health sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and video‑conferencing tools (Zoom, Teams).
- Knowledge of equipment, supplies and procedures used in radiography and nursing.
- Ability to set priorities and work under pressure.
- Computer literacy and willingness to learn new educational technologies.
- Commitment to lifelong learning and evidence‑based practice.
- Demonstrated initiative and organizational abilities; capable of working with minimal supervision.
- Excellent organizational, judgment, self‑initiating and problem‑solving skills.
- Experience working effectively in a collaborative team model.
- Effective interaction with faculty, students, departmental staff and external organizations.
- WHMIS and Transportation of Dangerous Goods certification or willingness to obtain.
- Strong oral, written and electronic communication skills.

- Mechanical aptitude related to minor equipment repair.
- Physical ability to complete the job.

Salary: $37.12 per hour
