Overview

Background
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join the Frostad Lab at the University of British Columbia working on the development of a new analytical instrument for use in product formulation in the food and personal care products industries (among others). This position is central to advancing our technology toward commercialization. The technician will focus primarily on efficient, accurate data collection and visualization, providing the foundation for presentations, manuscripts, and customer outreach.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience in hands-on experimental work in a laboratory setting, with a proven record of accuracy and efficiency in data collection.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for laboratory equipment and experimental setups.
  • Proficiency in Python for data visualization (e.g., pandas, matplotlib, seaborn, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with a commitment to providing consistent weekly progress reports.
  • Familiarity with CAD, prototyping, or other industrial design tools is a plus, but not required.
  • Educational background in a technical field is a plus, but not required.
Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain experimental equipment to collect high-quality datasets.
  • Maintain detailed, accurate, and organized experimental records in a laboratory notebook to ensure reproducibility and transparency.
  • Troubleshoot issues with instruments and experimental setups as they arise.
  • Organize, document, and manage research data to ensure reliability and reproducibility.
  • Generate clear, publication-ready plots and figures using Python.
  • Prepare weekly updates for project meetings, including progress summaries and data visualizations.
  • Collaborate with research staff and faculty to support ongoing experiments.
  • Optional/bonus: Contribute to design and prototyping tasks related to industrial design.
