Job summary

Royal Roads University invites applications for a Lab Coordinator to join the Lab Instructional Team, coordinating with the BSc Environmental Science Program Head and Senior School Manager. You will provide academic teaching and laboratory support for the School’s programs.

Responsibilities include supervising students in labs and field work, developing new labs, and procuring equipment. A MSc or BSc with relevant experience and WHMIS training are required.

Qualifications

  • Masters of Science or Bachelor of Science with 4 years of relevant experience.
  • WHMIS training and knowledge of safety protocols.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an instructional/research team.
  • Strong time management and prioritize tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic teaching and laboratory support for program labs.

Job Description

As part of the Lab Instructional Team (in coordination with the BSc Environmental Science Program Head and existing Lab Coordinator) and reporting to the Senior School Manager, School of Climate & Environment, you will provide academic teaching and laboratory support to the School’s programs. The specific duties involve: assisting with lab teaching, and marking lab activities to registered students; supervising students in the lab and assisting in field work; assistance with development of new course labs; and identification and procurement of equipment and materials needed for teaching and lab functions. This position requires knowledge of operation and simple maintenance of analytical instrumentation used for teaching and research in the School of Climate & Environment.

Job Requirements
  • Masters of Science or Bachelor of Science with 4 years of relevant experience
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of an instructional and research team
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and exercise time management
  • Detail oriented and results driven
  • Ability to give clear concise directions to students and to take a proactive approach to student questions and concerns (excellent written and verbal communication skills).
  • Ability to recognize your own limits and request assistance when needed
  • Ability to communicate well with members of the public (special interest groups using the lab, school teachers and parents attending lab programs as part of the school visitation program).
  • Committee work as required (i.e. Occupational Health & Safety, etc.), to represent the lab
  • Coordinating with program staff to schedule labs and complete lab bookings
  • Ensure adherence to all applicable safety regulations and protocols
  • First Aid training and/or Willingness to undertake first aid and other relevant training (i.e. WHMIS, Transportation of dangerous goods)
Additional Information

This is a regular, full-time position working 37.5 hours per week. This position has been evaluated at MPT-A with a salary range of $66,341 (minimum) to $77,946 (midpoint) to $89,553 (maximum) per annum. Employment offers will normally be made between the minimum and midpoint of the range and are determined by knowledge, experience and internal equity.
