Job summary

Lu’ma Native Housing Society is seeking a Kitchen Coordinator located in Vancouver. This role involves the planning and delivery of kitchen operations and meal preparation, ensuring that health standards are met and working in community settings.

The ideal candidate will possess relevant certifications, strong leadership skills, and knowledge of Indigenous cultures, able to manage kitchen supplies and prepare nutritious meals for residents.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years’ working experience in food service with a focus on kitchen coordination.
  • Valid Food Safe Level 2 and Occupational First Aid Level 1 certifications are required.
  • Strong knowledge of Indigenous Cultural Safety practices.

Job description

This role is to be performed onsite. Remote or hybrid work arrangements are not available for this position.

Schedule: 9:00am to 5:30pm Saturdays, Sundays, Statutory and Lu’ma Paid Holidays.

Work Hours: 8-hour workday with a half hour unpaid meal break.

Pay: $33.56 per hour plus a percentage in lieu of Statutory and Lu’ma Paid holidays, Vacation, Benefits and Optional RRSP as per the COPE 378 Collective Agreement.

Union: This position requires union membership.

Job Summary

Reporting directly to the Program Manager or designate, the Kitchen Coordinator’s primary role consists of the planning, coordination and delivery of all aspects of the kitchen such as meal planning, meal preparation, budgeting, and placing orders from distributors.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, facilitate and implement a community kitchen program;
  • Facilitate and plan meetings with the participation of residents;
  • Develop weekly and monthly menus and cooking schedules;
  • Ensure the kitchen has the necessary supplies, within budget constraints;
  • Ensure the kitchen meets Health & Safety standards;
  • Assist and/or coordinate serving meals and kitchen clean-up;
  • Liaise with the building community partnerships;
  • Develop, improve and grow the program;
  • Prepare nutritious meals, lunches, dinners and snacks for residents;
  • Prepare and maintain selection of pastries and daily dessert menu items.
Qualifications
  • A degree, diploma or certificate in a related subject, and/or relevant skill-based training;
  • Minimum 2 years’ working experience in food service with a focus on kitchen coordination; and/or food service in low barrier housing programs or settings;
  • An equivalent combination of relevant training and workplace experience may be considered;
  • Valid Food Safe Level 2 (or equivalent), Occupational First Aid Level 1 (or equivalent); Mental Health First Aid, NVCI/MANDT, WHMIS and Naloxone certificates;
  • Strong knowledge of the histories of the Indigenous Peoples’ of these lands, including their unique and diverse traditions, cultures, ceremonies, foods and medicines;
  • Strong knowledge of Indigenous Cultural Safety practices;
  • Establish and maintain a positive relationship with residents while maintaining respectful open communication;
  • Demonstrated leadership and teamwork skills;
  • Strong and effective communication skills (reading, writing and speaking);
  • Must be open to working with people who are struggling with substance use and/or mental & spiritual wellness;
  • Must understand and be comfortable working within a Harm Reduction framework;
  • Ability to work effectively with program staff, community partners and residents, including being non-judgmental in trying situations and demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage stresses and crises is required;
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position including lifting and carrying up to 23 kg (50 lbs.), repeated bending down and reaching up, and standing for extended periods during the entirety of the shift;
