Job summary

The City of Markham seeks an enthusiastic part-time instructor to plan, teach and supervise keyboard classes for participants from children to adults at Angus Glen Community Centre. You will create engaging lesson plans, ensure a safe learning environment, track attendance, and coordinate with the Recreation team to adapt activities as needed.

Ideal candidates bring keyboarding experience in instructional settings, current First Aid/CPR credentials, and strong communication skills to connect

Qualifications

  • Must be a minimum of 16 years of age.
  • Experience in keyboarding with children and adults in instructional settings.
  • Current Standard First Aid OR CPR C with AED.
  • High Five Certificate and adherence to Healthy Child Development principles.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication and customer service with diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates leads and supervises the program.
  • Organises and writes lesson plans to be handed in by week two of the program. Develops lesson plans specific to abilities and submits them after each session.
  • Prepares and organizes program equipment and supplies, maintaining an inventory and reporting shortages.
  • Keeps attendance records and informs supervisor of extended absences.
  • Ensures safety at all times, enforcing applicable safety policies.
  • Ensures site and equipment are suitable for activities and participants.
  • Notifies participants of upcoming events, changes or cancellations.

JOB SUMMARY

Plans, organizes, instructs and leads keyboard classes for participants from children through to adults. Ensures a positive and safe environment for participants and peers.

Hours of work

Varies by shifts or program. Shifts may be during the weeknights and weekends.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Facilitates leads and supervises the program.
  • Organises and writes lesson plans to be handed in by week two of the program. Develops lesson plans specific to the abilities of each group. Reviews lesson plans with the Recreation Supervisor/Program Coordinator prior to class and submits at the end of each session.
  • Prepares and organizes program equipment and supplies, maintaining an inventory of supplies, reporting to the Recreation Supervisor/Program Coordinator any items needing replacement.
  • Keeps attendance records and checks with participants who have extended absences. Gives all new participant names that are not on the list to the Recreation Supervisor/Program Coordinator
  • Ensures safety at ALL times, enforcing safety regulations as set out by the City of Markham sports, fitness, arts and leisure programs policies and procedures.
  • Ensures the site, equipment and supplies are appropriate to the activity and environment to reduce and minimize risk to other staff and participants.
  • Ensures all program participants are aware of upcoming events, program changes or cancellations.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be a minimum of 16 years of age
  • Demonstrated experience in keyboarding which includes working with children and adults in an instructional setting
  • Current certifications in Standard First Aid OR Intermediate First Aid with CPR C and AED
  • High Five Certificate and adherence to the principles of Healthy Child Development. (Children ages 6 to 12 years).
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills, customer service skills and sensitivity to interact with a diversity of parents and staff in a courteous and efficient manner.
