Responsibilities
  • Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and the Kenora Emergency Shelter Operations Team Lead, the Shelter Worker is responsible for facilitating an atmosphere of safety and positive reinforcement.
  • Work twelve-hour night shifts as part of a team focused on safety, stability and support for individuals in a housing crisis.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures of Canadian Mental Health Association Kenora Branch.
  • Engage with clients to connect them to services and ensure safety and security of all patrons during shifts.
  • Log patron contact throughout shift and assess/assist patrons with personal needs (e.g., hygiene, nutrition, medical or emotional).
  • Monitor and supervise the shelter and patrons; assist with needs, questions and shelter order per CMHA Kenora Branch policies.
  • Refer clients to community agencies and services where appropriate; complete shift responsibilities and routines.
  • Perform administrative functions as directed; communicate with Shelter Team Lead about building maintenance issues.
  • Carry out general housekeeping duties and assist with meal preparation, service and cleanup as required.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings and training; participate on committees or working groups as assigned.
  • Provide a safe environment by following Workplace Health and Safety Regulations and Policies, Infection Control Guidelines, WHMIS and Safe Work Procedures; contribute to emergency planning.
  • Support an environment that prevents and mitigates adverse outcomes in the delivery of mental health services; model healthy boundaries and self-care.
  • Work independently and as part of a team; demonstrate creative problem solving; manage conflict and crisis situations.
  • First aid & CPR/AED, Mental Health First Aid and NVCI or willingness to obtain; valid driver’s license.
Qualifications
  • Diploma in social sciences or human services is an asset; High school diploma or GED minimum.
  • Experience with individuals with mental health struggles, addictions, or demonstrated ability to work with vulnerable populations.
  • Personal qualities of empathy, understanding and patience; good interpersonal communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with community agencies; knowledge of community resources.
  • Cultural competence for diverse populations; understanding and application of Recovery Model.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practice and implementation; good documentation skills.
  • Ability to learn and understand online scheduling; proficient computer skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of personal space and ability to role model healthy boundaries.
  • Ability to manage conflict and crisis situations; ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  • First aid & CPR / AED; both Mental Health First Aid and NVCI or willingness to obtain.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
