Job description

We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Junior Project Accountant to join our growing finance team at our downtown Toronto office. Working closely with the Senior Project Accountant and project management teams, you will play a crucial role in tracking project costs, processing accounts payable, and maintaining accurate financial records for our active construction and development sites.

This fully on-site role is an excellent opportunity for an emerging accounting professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is eager to build a foundation in project-based accounting. You will gain hands-on experience with job costing, progress billing, and month-end closing processes while growing your career within a dynamic industry. This is a fully onsite role and 3 month contract to start with a strong potential to convert to permanent.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Invoice Management: Receive, review, and process high volumes of vendor and subcontractor invoices, ensuring accurate coding to specific jobs, phases, and cost codes.
  • Purchase Orders & Matching: Perform three-way matching of purchase orders, receiving tickets, and invoices to verify accuracy before routing for approval.
  • Payment Processing: Assist in the preparation of weekly cheque runs, EFT payments, and wire transfers, while maintaining up-to-date vendor files and responding to payment inquiries.
  • Job Costing Support: Assist the Senior Project Accountant in updating and maintaining project budgets, tracking change orders, and analyzing budget-to-actual cost variances.
  • Progress Billings: Help compile backup documentation for monthly progress billings (e.g., AIA documents, statutory declarations, and WSIB clearance certificates).
  • Document Management: Maintain organized and compliant project files, ensuring all contracts, holdback releases, and insurance certificates are current and properly filed.
Month-End Close & Reconciliations:
  • Reconciliations: Perform monthly bank and corporate credit card reconciliations, ensuring all transactions are accurately recorded and coded.
  • Journal Entries: Prepare and post standard journal entries, accruals, and intercompany transactions during the month-end close cycle.
  • Audit Assistance: Support the finance team during year-end audits by gathering requested documentation and preparing basic financial schedules.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Education: Post-secondary degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
  • Designation: Actively pursuing or intending to pursue a CPA designation is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience: 1 to 3 years of hands-on experience in an accounting or bookkeeping role. Previous exposure to the construction, real estate, or engineering industry is highly preferred.
  • Technical Knowledge: Solid understanding of fundamental accounting principles (A/P, A/R, reconciliations) and basic job costing concepts.
  • Systems Expertise: Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel (VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables). Experience with project-based ERP or construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Procore, Jonas, or Yardi) is a definite plus.
  • Soft Skills: Exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with both finance and non-finance stakeholders (e.g., Project Managers).
